what are betas?

Im with you too! My first ultrasound is on 17th but thats just 21 days post IUI, not sure what that will show. 5 days left!!
Can anyone explain to me what Beta's are?

Me: 30, High FSH, Slight Blockage on Left tube
DH: 33, Just above borderline counts
TTC: over 2 years.
8/27 : IUI (Gonal F, Ovidrel)
8/28 - 10/17 : Progesterone Vaginal suppositories
9/7 : HPT 
9/8 : Blood Test at Doc Office
Beta: 171 - 12dpiui
9/17: First Ultrasound. Saw one perfect Bean!
Beta: 4200 - 21 dpiui
9/24: Second Ultrasound. Baby growing bigger!
Beta: 34383 - 28 dpiui
9/26: Third Ultrasound due to bleeding. Saw Strong heartbeat of 121bpm.
10/3: Fourth Ultrasound. Heartbeat of 168bpm. Released to OB! YAY!
10/17: 1st OB Appt. Saw little arm/leg buds moving.
11/11 : 1st Trimester Screening - Good results!
11/14 : 2nd OB Appointment
11/26 : Emergency Appointment: Degenerative fibroids. No risk to baby or me. Just pain 
12/2: Pain reduced. Freedom!!
Still to come:
12/16 : 3rd OB Appointment
