It sounds like, from other people's posts, that they will give me a pregnancy test but also test my beta levels, and the higher the beta level, the better?
Also, how often in and when the US do they re-test, if you get a positive, to re-check your beta levels?

 Tracy!
I spent 3 weeks in Japan last year, it was amazing. I never made it to Osaka, but I bet it is lovely.
That must be really hard to have the extra stress of a language barrier during IVF. But you've made it pretty far into the process!
As for the pregnancy tests, I think the most common practice is to test your Beta Hcg numbers about 2 weeks after ER. (So the beta you were talking about is what they are actually testing for, the pregnancy hormone hcg that is released when your embryo implants and continues to secrete more and more of the hormone as your baby grows).
You can find beta hcg ranges online, but I wouldn't put too much weight in the ranges. The rule of thumb is that they usually test 14 days after ER and then 2 days later and by that time your beta hcg numbers should be doubling every time. They continue to do this for a little while to make sure the numbers are doubling.
Though low numbers and not doubling can be a sign of a problem, I've seen plenty of ladies come back from low betas and non-doubling betas to normal betas. So you have to be careful about reading too much into them at first.
Though, with my miscarriage in October our first beta was okay and then when we went back in it actually went down (beta 1 was 47; beta 2 was 27) -- this was an indicator that I was losing the baby, and I sadly did.
So, 14 days past ER, test for beta hcg, #s should double every other day.
Hope this helps!
Bridget
