The timeline for conceiving and having enough hormones present to show positive on a HPT are something like this: take the clomid for days 4-7 of your cycle (or something like that depending on dose), wait for ovulation which generally happens around day 12 (unless you are given a shot to cause ovulation) and THEN have sex or IUI 24 and 36 hours after ovulation (with IUI, usually just one injection on either time frame depending on sperm quality). Then you must wait. Even if conception happens immediately (which it probably wont since the egg has to travel down the tubes, find a sperm, then travel down through cervix into uterus) it takes another 6-10 days for implantation to happen. After implantation, then it takes several more days for your body to create enough of the right hormones to be detected on a HPT. Generally, there are two weeks to wait after ovulation for all the magic to happen. If you take a HPT too early while on Clomid or other fertility drug, you are very likely to get a false positive on your test because these drugs are there to trick your body into making the right hormones to create and release an egg which are to be replaced by a continued supply if you conceive. If you don't conceive, the hormone level drops and you get BFN. If you are prego, the hormone levels sharply rise and you get a BFP.
