I started taking prenatal vitamins as soon as we saw the re..they recomended them of course but I knew that folic acid was essential and i am already somewhat anemic so i knew the extra iron was essential...on the other side of the spectrum don't get worried that you are not already taking them..if you eat cereal for breakfast there is a good chance you are getting a good dose of folic acid as many of them are fortified as are breads and other prepared grain items(is that a food group? lol) this is becuz of the increase in folic acid deficient related birth defects that were ocurring so many prepared foods got a bump up to help with that...when i had my first son i was almost 3 months pregnant before i realized it(no af for years lol) and i had not been so much as taking a regular multivitamin but ate the dickens out of cereals and he turned out awesome...good luck to you ( i just buy otc prenatal however some people like a prescription cuz insurance co pays can make them cheaper and also medical can be tax deductible)
good luck again
