Here we go ....

Hello all,

I'm new to this board - was using a different one but not able to read or post anymore so I'm moving on. I'm really just starting this fertility process. My husband and I have been trying since Jan 2007. Earlier this year we met w/ a fertility doctor. I've had my HSG (all clear) and my husband had his semen analysis (a little low on volume and a little slow for motility but nothing to be alarmed at). After all tests and bloodwork came back okay the doctor said it was time to move on ... clomid w/ IUI. I'm on day 8 of my cycle so I just finished up the clomid. I go in for my first ultrasound on Friday to check my follicles (I like how everyone refers to them as follies). I've got that crazy HCG shot to give myself when the follies are the right size. After that, we're going to skip the IUI just for this cycle to attempt to conceive on our own. If that doesn't work, we'll do the IUI next cycle.

My doctor gave me grim success rates for IUI ... only 10%. Just doesn't seem like alot to me. After the IUI cycles (3), he's going to put me on some shots for another 3 cycles and then we'll be ready for IVF.

I'm trying to be as positive as I can but I can't help but think that none of this is going to be successful given the numbers the doctor gave me (and just a general feeling I have). I'm scared about how I will handle the disappointment month after month. I've handled it thus far but we haven't been doing any 'medical' procedures to get pregnant, just doing the old fashioned stuff.

So I'm hoping that here I can find people in similar situations who I can vent too from time to time because I can't do it with any of my friends because of course, they are all pregnant.

Thanks for listening! jen

Welcome!

The IF clinic in New Brunswick reports a 14% birth rate per cycle with IUI (35% with ivf), 10% may not be that off. He doesn’t sound like a very cheery person though, do you have other RE options? It’s important to have support from your Dr and feel comfortable with them.

TTC 4 years

2 year wait to see RE than RE takes 5 months off!

10/07-6/08- 6 rounds Clomid all = BFN

RE May 08 = waiting for DH appt. at clinic to see if his sperm will survive the wash and respond properly to “fallopian tube environment” – July 08 Passed!

5/08 Testing for Lymphoma- Negative!!! I just have Sarcoidosis.

6/08 Can’t get follow up appointment with RE until September--Am considering moving to the third world, than will not be surprised at inadequate health care.

8/08 Hysteroscopy and Lap removed polyp from uterus and adhesions to ovary and fallopian tubes, adhesions not previously diagnosed.

1st IUI 9/08-BFN

2nd IUI 10/08BFN

3 dogs & 3 cats

my doctor is a doctor ... i like him enough to have him help me get pregnant! i'm glad that he gave us the percentages so that we wouldn't get our hopes up too much - of course he didn't SAY that, he just said what the success rate was. sorry, don't know all the lingo and abbreviations on here to know 'RE' but i'm guessing you mean can i go to another doctor. no need, he's good enough.

that is horrible that you have a doctor on a 5 month leave!? not fair for you to have to wait. haven't we all waited long enough.

thanks ... jen

Jen,

I'm still learning much of the lingo myself, somewhere on this board I saw a list of acronyms to help, I just don't remember where. A RE is an IF specialist, a Reproductive Endocrinologist, they only deal in infertile couples. Many OB/GYN's also work in the field, but they may not have as much experience as a RE.

The waiting dose suck, but the good news is that she is coming back, up until a few weeks ago we thought she would be gone for good. That would mean I would have to go out of Province for services.

i found the area w/ the lingo break down ... too funny!

i'm not sure if my doctor is an RE or just an ob/gyn that dabbles in the field. i do know alot of other people that have gone to him (some have babies now, some do not).

tomorrow if my first ultrasound to check out my follies ... follies make it sound so much more enjoyable!

talk soon ...
