Congratulations on becoming a parent, I'm so happy for you! We celebrate a family day and an adoption day for each boy as they are different days for us as well. Enjoy

Today was supposed to be the TPR hearing. However, yesterday there was a big turn of events. His first parents told our social worker that they had changed their minds and wanted to take him home.
We were told we had to call them and make plans to meet. His first parents told us on the phone that they just wanted to take him to the park. We met them and they left with him and said it would be an hour. We sat in the parking lot for 2.5 hours, before they returned. We thought for sure we would never see our son again. I broke down and thanked them for bringing him back to us and asked if there is anything we can do to make this easier. I think we will have visits in the future which we have been open to all along. I know his first mom, too, is afraid she will never be able to hold him again, just as I felt last night. I feel for them and wish I could make everything better. Now the hearing will not proceed today. It will probably be another 2 weeks before the next TPR opportunity. For all of those thinking about domestic adoption, please be aware of the TPR waits - they vary per state. I, myself, would not recommend a state with a long TPR. It is too painful.

Kari, I can only imagine how hard it was to sit in the parking lot waiting for them to return. But it has to be equally hard on his birth parents. I just pray that God works it all out as it's meant to be.

Wow! I can't believe they took off with him! Did you go through an agency (sorry if you have said that before and I am just too scatterbrained to remember!)? If so I would get them involved and I would definately say no visits unless you are all present! That is just too much for you to deal with!
I'm sorry you are having to go through so much during what should be such a joyous time!

Kari, my heart is so sad for you right now. This is exactly why our agency would not let us adopt from Wisconsin. The length of wait is too difficult for almost everyone.
I know exactly the amount of stress you are under right now and I pray for you, I am praying earnestly for you, DH and your son's birthparents. It is not easy for anyone. Thank you so much for updating us on this site, I know we all want to support you however we can. If you need anything at all, let me know. If you want to talk more feel free to PM me. By the way, let out the tears whenever you feel the need. Be sad, be angry, don't hold it in. I know you are loving that little boy right now and that is the most important thing in the world. My thoughts are with you.

Kari, I'm so sorry to hear this. I was silently following along with your process as we are also thinking about adoption. I am
for you all through this difficult time. It seems cruel for them to be able to take him back after he's been with you all for a month or so. I understand this is hard for them too so I hope you are able to come to a workable solution for all involved. Take care and keep us posted.

Crying Inside - we did go through an agency. Actually, our social worker was the one who first called us in tears to let us know they were changing their minds. Until the TPR has occurred, his first parents can take him home or on visits when ever they want without us present. At this point he is their child, and we are in a sense, babysitters until they choose they do not want to be parents. After the TPR, the agency makes us his legal guardians until it is finalized 6 months after we brought him home. I think in the future we will really look forward to visits because we really like his first mom and we will all be present.
In WI and a few other states the TPR has to occur anytime within 30 days (though it has actually been longer for us already). Most states have a 48-72 hour window.

Oh, okay I understand now! Wow-I was just so angry for you!
I think our state's TPR is 24 hours and the finalization is 6 months. Although one agency said they give the Birth Mother 48 hours if she's had a C-section. I was just confused for a second. I pray that it all works out for all of you.

TPR postponed for one more week
Today was the court hearing for TPR. Our son's birthmom got nervous when they stated that the open terms we agreed upon are not legally binding. So, she would like to meet with us again to discuss the terms and more visits. We have always been very vocal about wanting visits and for him to have a relationship with her - so in a way this is good. However, now the judge postponed the hearing again until next Tuesday. Our son will be 8 weeks old at that time....we are still holding our breath!

Oh Kari I can so relate to your pain & fears. We went through 2 yrs of court hearing with our grandson having to give his birth parents more chances than they deserved to try to work with child welfare in order to get him back. They finally terminated their rights in July it was such a relief to know that we can now adopt him & know he is staying forever.
We were terrified at every court date that they would somewho convince the court that they deserve to have him back when they truly were in no shape to care for him at all. I pray that your TPR happens next week and you can breath a little easier knowing your son is staying with you. It is amazing how quickly you bond isn't it? I can't imagine loving a biological child more than I do our little boy, I just see how it could be possible.
