How old is too old... if there is such a thing

I wanted to know whether there is an age limit on adotpion. I know that laws may be different from country to country or even state to state but I have no idea. My DH is 44 and I am 36. We are still doing IVF at this point but I am just curious.

Heart

K,

I'm 43 and in the early stages of adoption (trying to complete a home study to be exact).

We attended a free seminar at the nearest Jewish Family Services Center (although we are not Jewish - they welcome everyone).

Age was one of my first questions. And yes, it depends on the country you want to adopt from should you choose international adoption. And I've noticed the ages seem to change all the time, so you will have to check it out if/when you are ready to adopt.

My mom has a friend who has a friend who is 68 and recently adopted. Her husband is 15 years younger and we were told that they averaged their ages to make the adoption possible.

In some countries, the rule is something like there may be no more than 45 years between the adoptive parents and child. This would mean at some point we would no longer be eligible to adopt a newborn from another country. That being said, many countries don't allow their children to be adopted until after they are 14 months old.

There are just so many different "rules" and I've learned that they often change.

Bottom line, I'd suggest you cross the age bridge when you get to it.

I hope this helps!!!

Love,
Julie

In my Province the adoption coordinator (aka Czar) will not allow adoptions with more than 40 years between the youngest parent and the adopted child. With a 10 year wait for infants we don’t qualify to be put on the waiting list. If we want to do infant adoption we will most likely have to adopt from the US. As Gemma said international adoptions will depend on the Countries rules but you will also have to contend with State or Municipal laws where you live.

Generally speaking, most domestic infant adoption agency prefer that one or both parents be under the age of 45 or 50. Some agencies and most attorneys don't have age requirements for adoption.
With international adoption it depends on the country you choose. Korea likes for both parents to be under 43, Russia states that the mother must be under the age of 48 (the father's age does not matter) and Ethiopia likes for both parents to be under the age of 50. Sometimes, age requirements are flexible if you open to special needs or older children.
