reporting depression
Hi Ladies
I am just starting the adoption process. I am noticing on some of the eligibility requirements that you have to report if you are or have been treated for depression. My DH is currently on meds for depression. Will this really keep us from adopting? I was looking specifically at the China eligilibilty reqs: "Both the husband and wife must be fully healthy physically and mentally. They must not have the following conditions: . . . medication for serious mental disorders, like depression, mania, anxiety neurosis, etc., stopped less than two years ago" I was pretty surprised at this. What do you think? Thanks!

Yep - China is out. My hubby is on meds for depression too and all of the agencies we have talked to about China have said sorry. China is tough! Sorry and best of luck to you and your hubby!

Yes China would be out, but you don't want in that line, I have been waiting 2.5 years for my baby from there and I still have another 2-4 year wait...
I know there are other countries where this is not an issue.

One thing that was suggested to me is calling around to a few social workers and just asking them. You don't have to use your name or anything and that way it is completely anonymous.
From my research most Asian adoptions are very strict on everything. Other countries that aren't as strict are Colombia or Ethiopia. As far as domestic adoption I really have no idea how it would affect it, but if you find out let us know!

Thanks ladies. I am a "reformed social worker" so I called one of my buddies still in the biz and doing home studies. We would definitely be out of the running for China. But not for other countries or domestic. I think it's a load of crap though that someone who does not get treated can adopt and someone who is self-aware enough to go get help can't! How backward.
My friend said it would be very bad to not be open on all info. They do the background and medical checks, so your agency would lose trust in you if they found discrepancies. PS -- Sarah and Stephanie, it's good to see you on the boards. I was MIA for a few months after the D&C. Everytime I signed on I would go check my due date thread and it would upset me, so I had to stop signing on. I am somewhat over torturing myself that way. I also sign on to the adoption forum now.

It's good to see you too. It's hard to be on here sometimes because I'm in such limbo. Waiting to be matched is hard. PM me if you have any other questions.
