health insurance coverage of baby and adoption

Just curious if anyone minds sharing but when do most of your health insurance plans start to cover the baby? It sounds like mine starts once in our home? Does that sound right/average?
So... then what if the birthmom does not have coverage and we are helping with the medical bills.... isnt the birth of a child thousands of dollars? Would we have to pay?

I know this is stuff i will ask the agency but wanted to see if anyone else had any experiences or advice ??

Thank you!!

Jen,

In our situation, our health insurance started paying after the TPR. We took our son directly home from the hospital at legal risk. It was 8 weeks before the TPR occurred (in WI it takes place in court). So, our agency said we were to tell our clinic that Medical Assistance should be billed for his appointments that occurred between the time we brought him home and the TPR. Though, the agency couldn't actually apply for Medical Assistance for him until after the TPR. Billing always takes so long, so by the time those bills were sent, Medical Assistance could cover them.

If you agree to pay a portion of the medical bills for the actual birth, that would probably be out of pocket for you. There was a possibility that we were going to be asked to pay for the deductable of our son's birthmom's insurance. If an emom did not have insurance we were told our agency would help to get them on some kind of assistance/insurance to reduce the cost.

Jen - Have you chosen an agency yet? I adopted internationally so I am not much help here, but is that a questions that people often ask when choosing agencies? And is the birthmother medicaid elligible? Can Medicaid cover the cost of a birth and appointments for the baby after birth?

Our agency takes care of birthmother medical expenses if she has no coverage. We are in MA and our insurance policy (BC/BS) went into effect the day the baby was placed with us (she was 4 days old). We didn't have a card for her yet, but our pediatrician's office just charged us the co-pay and then billed the insurance company after we got our card so we didn't have to pay anything out of pocket.
