We adopted our Older 4 children through fostercare.
It was truly a blessing for us. We fostered for about 7 years and close to 60 kids. We originally went in hoping to adopt an infant-2 year old child, but we were also interested in sibling groups. The adoption worker told us straight up that they do not do infant adoptions and that if we were interested in a baby or young child that our best bet was to foster first and then if the baby came up for adoption we would ahve first choice whether we wished to adopt that child or not. It was a hard process emotionally. For the first year and a half or so we had many children come and go, a couple that we were told would come up for adoption and then they were either returned home to a relative or the parents. We considered adopting through our church agency instead and started the paperwork. They told us that once we were placed with a child we would have to quite fostering until the adoption was finalized. It was a hard choice to make since we had had a new foster girl coem into our home a few months prior and were again told she will likley come up for adoption. But having been told that before and nothing coming of it, we decided we'd just continue to foster until we were placed with a child of our own....one way or another we were determined to finally build our own family. But before we could even turn in the paperwork to start the process through our church agency we got a call for our son Gregory who was about to turn 4 and needed a foster home immediately because his adoptive placement had failed. They gave us the option to adopt and we fell in love with him right away and knew he was meant to be ours. So we spoke with the church agency and told them once we finalized his adoptions we'd come back to them and try and adopt a baby girl. Well, before we could even finalize his adoption we were placed with a newborn baby girl who was a legal risk foster/adoption. Right after we finalized Gregory's adoption we were told that we were approved to adopt this newborn baby that we named Laura. While we waited for her adoption to be finalized we continued to foster other children as well. One of which happened to be that same little girl that we were told originally may come up for adoption. Well, right before we finalized Laura's adoption we found out that the little girl we had been fostering was about to go home....then last minute everythign changed and she was now legally free for adoption. So we finalized Laura's adoption and waited to finalize Riley's. Int the meant time continued to foster other children as well. Before we could finalize Riley's adoption we got the call for an 8 week old baby boy and foudn out he would likely come up for adoption as well. We hadn't planned on adopting anymore after Riley, since we knew we still wanted to try and have one of our own as well (we had also been having fertility treatments during some of that time). But as soon as we got the call about him we knew it was also meant to be so we fostered him as well. We finalized Riley's adoption and waited and continued to foster Coleman. His case turned out longer than anyone had expected and then after the parents rights were terminated his birthmom held it up even longer by appealing it. But finally after about 2 1/2 years of fostering him the appeal was denied and we were then able to finalize his adoption. We continued to foster until our license expired May2008 and at that time had already suffered a couple miscarriages...during that year...and were pregnant with our son Logan. We decided that we were done fostering and adopting (at least for now) and closed that chapter of our lives...and just gave birth to our son Logan on New Years Eve. Going through all that was one heck of an emotional roller coaster but it was definately worth it. If you feel prompted to take that step than I say go for it. It won't be easy but the blessings are well worth every bit of it.

Hi, We also are going to foster to adopt. We did IUI's for about 2 years with no success. We couldn't afford IVF so we decided to go thru the foster system. We have nearly completed all the requirements and the only thing left to do is a home repair. Once that is done we will get our license.
Just rcently we got a new insurance that covers IVF. So we decided to give it a try. I will have my transfer tomorrow. We still want to pursue fostering though. Looks like you and I are following similar paths. Good luck on your IVF!

SAme here, my new ins covers IVF and right now its at 100% so its too good to pass up. GL to you! We still need to get our CPR and First Aid classes, finger prints, physicals and then have the official walk through.. My best friend is licensed through the same agency. Took about 7 months after her classes to get her license. 6mths later she gets a beautiful well adjusted 3yr old girl..ready for adoption! I hope im as lucky as her! We are wanting a girl age 0-3years of age. Since we already have our little boy we would like the experience of raising a daughter as well. Are you open for a boy or girl? what age group are you looking at?

We are open to a boy or a girl and any race. And we would like to foster/adopt a child younger then my youngest who will be 4 next week.
How are you doing on your ivf cycle? I just got a bfp. We are being cautiously optimistic right now. Good luck on the classes and everything else. It does take awhile to get done but it will be worth it.

Anyone adopting through foster care?
Let's start with: If a non-relative even thought about adopting my godchildren, they'd have to get through me first, but I've never gone a year and a half without seeing them, and I also keep my goddaughter here during the school week because she catches the school bus from my house.
If this person is a non-relative who hasn't actively been involved in the children's lives for over a year, the odds are very much against them getting any kind of custody, visitation, etc. I'm not even sure how much rights I would have if anything happens to my godkids' mom, and I'm listed in the will and on the school records of the older one as alternate guardian. I believe if that was contested by a relative who stepped up, I'd probably lose. |

We are going through the state; however we are going to foster a bit first.
We need to get our feet wet and let the reality sink in a bit. |

Thats kind of what we are doing too. We will take in higher risk kids, ones more likely to tpr and go from there. We are going to try and take our cpr and first aid class in the next couple of months and then contact our SW when DS is 1 to get our license started. We've already finished the Mapp classes so just waiting on a walk through, physicals and finger prints to finish up. Where in the process are you?

We actually got a sibling pair of toddlers 1 day after our class (about 6 months early). There were some high risk factors that meant they needed a house with no other kids so they had to speed us through the system.
With the placement we got a temp license and we just finished all the other work to get the perm license a few weeks ago. I think we should get the perm license in the next week or so. It has been an interesting ride to say the least . |

yeah, about 3 months now I guess.
I talked with the kids SW yesterday and asked how common it was to have placements like that and she said it is pretty random all around. FP's that are less picky tend to get placements faster (one of the boys is special needs which was another factor). A lot of people go 7-8 months without placements. People who only take babies can go for over a year. |
