infant adoption, where to begin?
I just found out this week that yet another BFP has turned into a miscarriage after three years of stims and inventions ttc. I am now realizing that we may not be able to have our own biological children. And my internal clock is just ticking away. I am now ready to look into infant adoption but am finding it so overwhelming! How does one begin? There seems to be a million options: domestic or international, numerous agencies to choose from, private vs state adoption processes, how long does it take? I live in California, but does that even guide me in my decision making? I'm lost. Any pointers in the right direction would be most welcomed!

I don't know much about the state of California, but on another forum I am part of they recommend getting a list of agencies in your area, going to their information meetings, and asking questions. They also strongly recommend only working with state licensed agencies and not facilitators. Also, it is better if you can work with someone who doesn't want a lump sum of $$ up front. Then you'll need to decide if you want to do a foster to adopt, domestic or international, because they are all different. This is one of the harder parts of adopting.. the leg work.
I think that it is important to feel comfortable with whom you work with. We have a local agency and a national one. We started the process at the beginning of this year (January 2010) and are now waiting to be "matched." Good luck to you.

My children were adopted internationally and I would be glad to talk with you about it if you are interested. At this point though there are a limited number of countries open and no countries have young infants available for adoption. So if you feel strongly about wanting a baby then domestic is probably your best route. Do feel free to PM me though if you would like information about international and I can give you some starting points.
I also wanted to suggest you check out our sister site Adoption Forums, Message Boards, Discussion Groups. Adopting, Foster, Baby Adoptions . I joined origionally in June 2004 when we were about half way through the adoption process and am still on there several times a day because of all the wonderful people who post there. It is really a lot like this site. Just about adoption instead of fertility. There are tons of helpful people who can help guide you in the right direction regarding domestic adoption. Good luck! And definetly PM me if you have questions regarding interntional adoption.
