Agency Recommendations/ India adoption
My husband and I are at the beginning of the Adoption process. I am trying to find an agency with an India Adoption program and am finding the process daunting. Could anyone comment on their experiences with Journeys of the heart or any other agency.

I would be cautious attempting to adopt from India unless you are NRI/OCI ( a family of Indian decent/or a Indian citizen living abroad). It is highly unlikely that a family who does not fit this qualification will be allowed to adopt from India. The exception to this is a child with significant special needs, or over the age of 12. I would ask JOH how many families have succesfully adopted a child in the age range/special needs that you are interested in. Most agencies are not accepting new applications until CARA (the government agency in India that oversees adoptions)has implemented the new rules. They are expecting the full implementation to occur after May 2012. Hope that helps.

I hate to say it but I agree with small town oregon girl. I would not start an Indian adoption right now, any agency that is saying it is a 'good' use of resources may be questionable. I think they are a few mos out from getting their stuff together for an India program but not there yet.
That said, have you considered China Special Need? Our DD came home in January via that process. Her Special Need was that she was premature and low birth weight. She is totally fine! The entire process was reliable and quick (12 mos from start of process to pick up in southern China). She is not Han Chinese so we get a lot of questions about her ethnicity. My Indian Girlfriend is married to a white man and when we are out ppl think my DD is her daughter! My point is just that when you adopt internationally it really does not matter where the kiddo was born, they will be American and your child no matter what. My daughter is chinese but most people think she is hispanic or from Guatamala. :-) Quote:
