Question How Many IUI Cycles?

Hi, I am 31 & my husband is 30. We have been trying to have a baby for 1.5 years now ....but . My dotor is put me on Clomid & have had one cycle of IUI .... but . Currently on 2nd cycle & waiting for results.
Need advice on how many cycles of IUI should we try before we go for IVF ? Also what is the average cost of IVF ? Any nice stories would help us be positive

Thanks

Ask your doctor. I just finished my first cycle. But the dr, told me maybe 2 or 3 cycles then he will move on. the cost depends on your insurance and which state you live in.

Good luck!!

Well my doctor said he typically would do 3-6 assuming the medication protocol seemed to be working (clomid, injectables...). I did 6 and then took time off because I wasn't ready emotionally for IVF, then when I went back after a "natural" break for a while, my first one worked. It's partially up to you and what you feel is right and listen to your doctor if you trust her/him.

Hi Needanswers

I've been hangin' out over in the clomid forum, but I saw your post and realized we have lots in common. I'm 31, DH 30. We've been trying just over a year too and are on our 2nd month of clomid. My doc gave us the option to try IUI with clomid, but we decided to just do clomid for 3 months. My next appt with my doc is on march 21st, I'm going to ask her if we can go straight to IVF after the 3rd month. I'm sure everyones situation is a little different, but for me I don't think we're gonna try IUI. We don't have insurance coverage anyway, so it doesn't matter for insurance purposes.

Good luck!

I'm 37 dh 33. 3rd iui 2day. 2 sets of iui each time. So far no luck. We may do one more or go straight 2 ivf. Its about 12k not including medication. I'm hoping i get pregnant this time. I keep talking 2 myself about the baby. Staying positive...I even had a dream last nite about having a baby girl! It felt so real!

Question Trying our first attempt at IUI

My first time on this site, but it looks cool. I'm 41 and trying meds for the first time. My husband and I tried for the last 3 months naturally and not preggo yet. So to not waist time, we are trying Gonal F, Ovidrel and Ganerelix. I'm also focusing on accupucture and taking an herbal supplement called Ovulex. Has anyone tried this combo?

Also I need to remember to take my vitamins. Have taken Garden of Life Women's Formula which has lots of veggies in it.

Would love to here your thoughts. Thanks.

Darlene

needanswers,
Unfortunately, the entire process is really individual. It depends on you and your husband, the clinic and your insurance. If you don't want to wait and can afford or have coverage, the success rates of IVF are higher for most clinics than IUI. My RE originally recommended 3 cycles with clomid and IUI but after our first failed IUI, we just told him we didn't want to wait and wanted to move on to IVF. Fortunately for us, the majority is covered by insurance and cost is a HUGE factor in when to proceed to IVF. Good luck!

Hi there! Like others have said, it is a personal decision for each couple regarding whether to stick with IUI's or switch to IVF. There is a difference in cost, but also a difference in success rates. I think about 20% or less for IUI and more like 50-60% for IVF depending on a number of factors. Some have insurance coverage for somethings and some don't.
I know on this forum there are numerous ladies who have done many IUI's and have a thanks to it. I also know there are some who decide to move on to IVF.

For me personally, my DH and I are currently thinking that we will try 3 medicated IUI's and if unsuccessful will be moving on to IVF in the fall.

I hope this cycle is it for you!

it is hard to decide but for me insurance made it easier. We tried 3 cycles and then moved to IVF. Good Luck

Hi, I am 29 and DH is 30. Our doctor recommends three IUI's, and if there is not success with that, to move on with IVF. We were supposed to do our 3rd IUI on Wed, but it has been cancelled due to poor egg development. Our IUI's were billed at $670 for the procedure and the ultrasound, but we have ins. I'm sorry, I can't provide a cost-estimate on IVF, because again, our ins will cover. We are moving to IVF next month.

a lot depends on you-

our insurance does not cover ART. period. the injectables are 160 Euro a box, (I go thru 2 boxes a cycle) and the IUI was 187 Euro. That works out to about $700 a cycle. We are military stationed in Germany and thankgawd for the pay raise that came with the promotion, but if this IUI didn't work we are going to take a month off to save up the money and then try again.

Germans don't take credit cards...(although thats probably a good thing, keeping me from getting seriously into debt!)

IVF is not an option for us while living in Europe. IVF starts at 5,000 EURO (!) and so we are going to do IUI until we bust...or get preggars

Sixth cycle

I'm on my sixth cycle, 4th IUI (most likely tomorrow or the next day). IVF isn't an option due to age (me 45, DH 44) It would take too long to get through the donor process and I don't want to be 48 and pregnant

But I wouldn't mind 45/46....if this goober would just work. Motility is great, and nothing big is wrong with me, just low estrogen, so hopefully the changes this month will help with that. '

Insurance covers nothing for me. I spend on average about $1000 a month on the meds, $650 for the IUI. IVF would be around $10 to $15,000 if it were an option.

We just finished our 4th month on meds, the 2nd on injectables. I found out this month that it was actually cheaper to pay for the Ovidrel out of pocket than to pay my insurance copay.

As far as how many cycles, most RE will say if you have been on a treatment plan for months and are not getting a positive results then it is probably time to move on. That being said, IVF was never an option for us either because of the cost. Here in KS it is $15,000 a pop and that is not including meds.

So it is up to each individual couple to deicde how many times they will try a certain treatment option and when it is time to either abondon fertility treatments or start entertaining other options. My RE here told us in the beginning that he would not do more than 6 months of treatment with IUI, clomid and gonal F.

First IUI Treatment and Pregnancy Test

I just completed my first round of Clomid, Follistim & Ovidril....did the 2ww and tested this morning. Negative. To say the least really disappointed. I'm 43 and trying for my first child. I was really hoping that my husband and I would have luck on our first try.
