Question Should I continue meds and believe I have PCOS?

Hi All,

I have been recently diagnosed with PCOS and have been on Metformin the past 2 months and took Clomid this cycle. I started temping in March and have completed 2 cycles of charting so far. Now my question....

The first cycle of charting (March) was a perfect bbt chart that showed pre-O temps, Post-O temps clearly. The following month I had consulted a RE who diagnosed me with PCOS and put me on Metformin saying that I may not be ovulating due to the hormonal imbalance. I found that hard to believe becoz i don't have any symptoms of PCOS, of normal weight/height with very regular periods that range from 3-4 days of flow and cycles of 28-31 days. In any case, I heeded the advice of my RE and took the medicines and ever since have been seeing messy temps. You can view my charts here:

26418b Ovulation Charts

Should I take a chance and stop my medicines for a couple of cycles to see if I do ovulate on my own? I have a strong feeling that maybe even if I do have PCOS, it's a mild condition and my RE is blowing it out of proportion and putting me on meds that's confusing my hormones. I've read that alot of women with PCOS continue to conceive without help and have children because it's not a serious condition.

I seek the advice of friends here who are more experienced with charting. Thanks in advance!

Weird! What made your RE think that you had PCOS?? Was your BBT chart showing a good thermal shift during your normal 28-or-so day cycles?

PCOS is a serious condition, though some women have mild cases of it. What made your RE think you have it? There's a lot more to it than just your weight and regularity of cycles. I wouldn't discontinue the medication before having a conversation with your doctor about the diagnosis.

Question

Well, on my first visit to the RE, she conducted a pelvic/USG scan followed by a follicular scan. That was when she diagnosed me with having PCOS becoz apparently there were small cyst-like formations on my left ovary. I was puzzled, came back, did some research on the internet about PCOS and realized that I don't have any signs or symptoms of PCOS at all. Neither have I missed a menstrual cycle from my time I had my first period. My periods have always been on time +/- 2 or 3 days. On my next visit to the RE, I shared my findings with her and said that my periods have been very regular and I don't see how I could have PCOS and she said, it's possible to bleed even while you have anovulatory cycles. But on my first cycle charting, it showed a obvious shift of temperature of 0.8 Deg Faren. after I ovulated. So I conclude that it's not possible for temps to show a clear thermal shift if I had anovulatory bleeding that cycle rite?

I am still continuing my medication but I'm worried as to if I'm putting my body under unnecessary stress. That's the last thing I need when I'm trying to conceive.

Did you see the ultrasound images? Were the cysts on your ovary a "string of pearls"? If you're not sure what I'm talking about, a quick Google search should turn up enough results to explain it. Not everyone with multiple ovarian cysts has PCOS. My mother has them but doesn't have PCOS. I was asking her about it one day and she said her cycles have always been very regular as far as she can recall.

Your RE is right in saying that you can bleed without having ovulated, but I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't happen with the regularity you're talking about. If it's a possibility, I would consider getting a 2nd opinion from another RE. And I wouldn't worry about the stress too much. I read awhile back that the stresses of trying to get pregnant aren't enough to throw your body out of whack to the point that it makes it harder to conceive.

Hi Persephone1881,

I never got a chance to see the images nor was I given any printed films of the scan. I think I'll get a 2nd opinion from another RE. That'll put my mind at ease.

Thanks so much for advice dear!
