Question Help Please-- MTHFR Mutation

I just got dignosed with this by my neurologist. I was having headaches & through conversation he asked me if I ever had any m/c's. I've had 1...He told me he wanted to to do a panel of tests....so then it was discovered.....
Today I received the results that I have 2 copies of the MTHFR C677T mutation & I'm negative for the A1298C....

Can anyone shed some light on this?....I've been referred to a blood specialist, but I just want to know what I'm dealing with......

Thanks ladies.......

Hey hon -

Sounds exactly like me, they found my blood clotting issues from my neurologist and headaches also.

I have similar MTHFR genes (hetero on the 677 and 1298) and also APS (Antiphospholipid Syndrome). My experience (though limited) is that you will want to take extra Folic Acid (I take Folgard twice a day) and when you get pregnant again you will want to be on a blood thinner like Heparin or Lovenox. I also heard that taking baby aspirin (81 mg daily) will also help with implantation.

Jencat is really good at explaining all this stuff, but from what I've read and heard from my doctors is you want to be on extra Folic Acid, baby aspirin and a blood thinner after you get a positive pregnancy test (or after ET in an IVF cycle).

I hope this helps you some, there are a lot of us with this and it is completely manageable so don't panic! You just need to make sure you are your own advocate when talking to the doctors because some don't know what to do with the information...

The MTHFR gene (from what I understand) puts you more at risk for miscarriages. Now if they tested you for other blood clotting disorders like APS than you can have a higher risk of getting blood clots after pregnancy (so I will be on blood thinners for about 6 weeks after delivery as well). But generally speaking, unless you have had a thrombotic event (i.e stroke or blood clot) they will usually only do treatment for when you are actually pregnant to prevent miscarriage or blood clots. However, I think you should take Folgard and the baby aspirin before you are pregnant and while trying to conceive. You would only need the blood thinners after you get pregnant and possibly for a few weeks after delivery.

I just wanted to tell you that I have the same thing and my RE advised me to take the baby aspirin everyday along with my prenantal vitamins, and he also prescribed Mentax, which is an additional boost of folic acid, B6 and B12. These are the normal vitamins the mutation attacks in our systems which can lower your progestrone level and also hinders implantation, or causes miscarriages. The other girls explained it really well. Good Luck I will keep everything goes well for you.

I had MTHFR of the C677t and was on Lovenox for the pregnancy, I was supposed to change at 36 weeks but I had the baby early at 6 weeks 2 days ( not from this blood issue!) What they don't tell you is after you have the baby you have to continue the shots for 6 weeks! It is worth it to have the bundle in your arms but do not be suprised when they tell you you have to take them again after! i had to have a scheduled C-section but then had a early ER C-seciton becuase of it, some Dr's will do vaginal birth some prefere the C-section! It is not that bad you get used to the shots, it gets harder when you get bigger and your tummy streched a bit!

I am MTHFR homozygous, so I have two copies of the mutation. The research now shows that even if you have the mutation, as long as your homocystine levels are within normal limits, you will not have any increased risk for blood clots. I am taking a baby asprin and take more folic acid just in case, however, as my homocystine levels are in normal ranges, my OB and MFM are not concerned. So if you just have the MTHFR it may be that they don't do anything additional for you. Obviously with leiden factor 5, ASP, these are all completely different stories and a blood thinner will be necessary.

I am homo for mthfr c677t also. Same info aspirin, folgard rx, and lovonox during pregnancy. There is an increase risk of blood clots if you have elevated homocystine levels. As a precaution I def wouldn't smoke either it drastically increases the risk of blood clots.

Mtfhr C677t

I was diagnosed today with two copies of the C677T mutation, I am TOTALLY freacking our right now, my RE said to make an appointment with my primary care but I think I should see a specialist for this.
RE made it sound like it wasn't a big deal, but it looks to me as it is, she said to make sure I take 1 mg of Folic Acid but that's it no baby aspirin nothing or B12

I am 5 weeks 2 days pregnant, one 9 year old girl (no complications) had two early MC in the last year.

Thanks

Laura
