Next step for one blocked tube?

Hi guys,
I discovered via HSG a few weeks ago that my right tube is blocked, maybe from appendectomy scarring? I have used Clomid and developed follicles with that, so it seems that I respond ok to meds.

I have an appt in a few weeks with a RE and am wondering what other people have done in this situation. Has anyone here been put on injectables with only one patent tube? Maybe they'll want to try to open tube before meds? Just wondering what I might be facing in a few weeks, getting anxious to see what they say!

Hi

Hi I just Had my blocked fallopian tube removed. Dr. said it was to improve future IVF. However I did some research and found out that some women after having blocked fallopian tube removed become Pregnant Naturally.

I also have a right blocked tube and have previously lost the left. I was told that even with opening one up, you could get pregnant though you have a higher risk of having an eptopic pregnancy. We went ahead and did IVF with the right tube still blocked and were successfull on our first and only try.

Hi Kelly,

When I found out that my tubes were blocked, my RE went over options with me.

He said that he would first go in and try to clear them. He said that if he could only clear 1 tube and not the other, because of my age and the time I've been TTC, he would put me on injectibles to increase the chance of getting a good egg from the one side, but chances of multiples would be higher with the FSH.

So if I had to guess, that your doc will put you on some form of injectible FSH. Are they sure it's scarring that blocked your tube or mucus (like mine)? I think the only way they can tell for sure is by hysteroscopy/laparoscopy. But I don't think they would go that route with you, at least not the laparoscopy, if you have one open side. If it's mucus, there is a chance that the dye can clear it. Will keep my fingers crossed for you that it did.

Hey guys, thanks for sharing the options that you were given.

Santos75, hopefully you're recouperating nicely from your surgery and that you are able to get pregnant right away! Are you going to try IVF?

Bri01, congrats on your pregnancy! I can see going to IVF right away without opening a blocked tube, especially if that's the only one you have. So glad that IVF worked on your first cycle - how great is that?!

Cathy, the conversation with your doc is interesting to me. I'm very happy that both your tubes cleared and that you have good opportunity for your eggs to be fertilized on both sides. I don't think my doc was able to clear the blockage from the right tube during the HSG, unless it happened after the test. I asked my doc if he thought it might be scarring from the surgeries and he didn't think so since 1) there wasn't any infection after the surgeries and my appendix hadn't ruptured and 2) the blockage appears to be right beside the uterus, not towards the ovary. The other thing I wonder about is if I might have some endometriosis since I had horribly painful periods before I started on OCP's, in fact, that's why I started taking them. The only way to diagnose endometriosis is with the diag lap, and so I had wondered if they'll do that before starting meds especially since my one tube is open already. My doc thought the same as you though...he thinks the RE will start with injectables. That scares me to no end....multiples!

Thanks, girls, for the thoughts. It's so nice to have people to talk to about this stuff!

I've also just had an HSG in March '09 and have been diagnosed with a (nearly completely) blocked right fallopian tube. My doctor is going to be starting me on injectibles in advance of IUI in May. She recommends at least one round of IUI and then we'll be moving to IVF. She also tells us that yes, it is possible for us to concieve naturally right now. However, in about 18 months of trying, it hasn't happened - hence the more aggressive strategy in the coming months.
