Our RE doesn't have a list of donors, but they did provide us with a list of agencies. We decided to us an agency in our state so that we could avoid paying travel expenses for the donor. We were able to search a database of donors and choose based on age, religion, hair color, ethnicity, etc. We found someone who was perfect for us. We were able to see photos of the donor which was very helpful.

We looked at de agencies and our clinic. Luckily finances are not an issue for us so we are fortunate. I decided against the agency it creeped me out. I did not want to see a photo of the donor in the end. I think I would always see her face and did'nt want to be reminded of the painful decision. My sister even offered but the clinic said she was too old at 35! My re hand picked her for me and I have been at the clinic for 3 years. The de nurse and re said she is a good match and was proven 4 times. Many agency girls are not proven or are cycling too much which was a concern. My re is very controlling and screens them by strict guidelines. I would use a donor from the states but it is a very personal decision. Just to finish I always believe the child you have is the one you are supposed to have no matter what. Good luck and go with your gut feellng it is truly a leap of "faith."

Dona, I'm so sorry to hear about your nephew. How awful!
We found our donor through our RE. The clinic has a strict donor selection process and we were lucky to find the perfect donor for us on their donor list. Good luck to you!

My RE provided me with a list of agencies that he knew were reputable and that we could trust. We found a proven donor, who was young and also had 4 healthy children of her own. My RE screened her and did his own medical tests on her before beginning our cycle.
I am very sorry to hear about your nephew. I wish you all the best with your donor search.

Thank you all for your thoughts about my nephew and for your posts.
I do have a great RE and his nurse is a friend, I know she'd do her best to match me based on their list, which we found two good matches off of. I called to find out their programs and costs and it's actually very reasonable, so I think we may consider doing DE here in the USA, with my RE. They have a shared risk which includes three fresh and three frozen attempts (when using DE) and that base is $20,000. There is an additional $5,000 for the donor, which I knew about, and $750 for ICSI. Then, the only other thing is the donors meds, which I can get at $10 each through my hubby's amazing insurance coverage. And, if after all attempts are exhausted, we still do not have a live birth, they refund me 70% of that base fee, but all I want is babies, I don't care about a refund...but I guess it is nice to know it's there if we must use it. Do you all think this sounds like a really good shared risk program? I thought it did, when the nurse and account coordinator explained it to me over the phone, but I'd like your thoughts based on you experiences. Can somebody also explain to me what typical meds a donor might be on? I know for me, with having major issues, I had to be on high doses of high cost drugs, but didn't think a proven or good donor needs such costly meds or in the massive quantities some of us have had to take. Any thoughts on this? Just curious what I'd actually have to buy for a donor. Thank you so much, Dona

drug costs
Hi, I can give you an idea of DE drug costs. I was told to expect $2-3,000 for a young egg donor who would require average doses rather than high. In the end the uninsured cost was $1973. My drugs were covered by insurance (Estrace & progesterone IM), they just had higher co-pays than my usual prescriptions (about $50). Total drug costs on my end for 8 weeks was $200.
