How did you pay for your donor cycle?

Hi ladies. I was just told that my cost for donor eggs will be $12,000 and dh and I feel lost. If you don't mine, could you share how you paid for your donor cycles? I understand if it's too personal, I'm just looking for some ideas. Our parents just can't really help us and our credit card has a very low limit.

Thanks a lot!

In my situation, I didn't need to pay for my "donor eggs" but in the past for medical expenses (lasik surgery and dental procedures) I have used CareCredit. I am not sure if this situation would qualify, but it might be somewhere to start. In my experiences they have had 2 year no interest or 1 year no interest plans. Also, you may be able to set up a payment plan with your fertility clinic. We have done that for my partners portion of the IVF expenses that were not covered at all by insurance.

I wish you the best of luck!!!!!!!

Capital One does a lot of Infertility financing and has very low interest rates, they started at 1.9% last time we checked.

There are also Shared Risk plans available, which aren't necessarily less expensive, but do guarantee a refund if the cycles aren't successful.

We are going to be using both of these options with our upcoming DE cycle(s).

Good luck!!

Our R/E's office offered an 18 month interest free plan. We were able to put $10,000 on that plan but the rest has been mostly on credit cards or the occasional debit card. The funny thing is our health insurance doesn't cover fertility treatments but I gave them my card anyway which they run through every time. It's been great for two reasons...the office accepts the negotiated rate of the health insurance company, thus reducing the rate and some procedures actually did end up getting covered or being applied to my deductible.

I hope things work out for you!

thank you, ladies! we were accepted for the capital one healthcare loan, but the interest rate was very high b/c of our credit. we will probably use that though, and try to pay it off more quickly.

i don't think our clinic does a payment plan - not nice!

thanks for all the help!

Costs?

How is your donor cycle only 12.000 USD? At IVFNJ it is about 38.000 -40.000 USD for the whole thing (medicines, transfers, etc).

Astrocat- I am doing a Donor Egg Cycle using frozen eggs in ATL. It is $17000. There success rates at my particular doctor are the same as fresh donors.

We did the un-American thing...we saved up!!!

$4000 to donor (we used DH's sperm)
$3000 to RE's inhouse social worker
$6000 for IVF/ET (I got 25% off a reg cycle- $7895)
$150 for extra meds (the bulk was left over from Jan cancelled cycle- where meds were over $3000)
$600 Anesthesia for donor

So total about $14,000.

Even better, we paid using our Citibank dividend MC, just so we could get 1% cash back.! OK, so it was $140 cash back, not much. But we never keep a balance on any credit card, so we NEVER pay finance charges...our credit card company actually pays us to use their cards.

In this economy, it pays to be thrifty!!!

astrocat - our insurance covers the ivf and meds for both me and the donor. we pay out-of-pocket for the donor fee, program fee and cryopreservation if necessary.

lewlou - no, it's not a shared cycle. and yes, i'm doing the prep cycle right now then we'll put a deposit down and get put on the list to receive donors. thanks for the support!

Normally your doc has the application info on care credit available there. I'm sure it's online somewhere too, but they used to adjust interest rates for some docs (higher ticket items) so it helped to have their code on the application. (I haven't sold credit cards for a few years so this might have changed).

We sold a house (and plan on using this as a major guilt issue when the kids want to borrow our car). Mind you, we had an extra one, and we were going to sell it anyhoo, but literally we close on Tuesday and I will pay via credit card on Wednesday for the IVF cycle (25,000 with donor eggs but they said they'd use my drugs if they can which could save me a few thousand).

At this point, I could have freaking paid cash instead of wasting all of the money I've spent on IUI's. Ohhh well I hope we don't run out of houses

I'm new to this donor egg thing...is a shared cycle one where you share the eggs? I'm not sharing (quite the pig huh) but we are going to donate the embryo's we don't use. Anyone want one...I could throw it in the freezer and mail it out overnight

Prices Vary State to State

Several people are shocked about costs on here...I am in Ohio and was told a DE cycle costs 20,000 (Around 8,000 donor costs, testing etc. and the rest for the procedure) If you want a shared risk program, we would have to travel to different cities and they offer 3 DE cycles for 28,000 with a refund before 8 weeks PG. My friend in California paid using a credit card 30,000 for one DE cycle. Another lady I know in Massachusetts paid more and used the Capital One plan for one cycle. Hubby and I are traveling to Maryland to use a clinic that charges 25,000 6 DE attempts, guarantee of 100% to delivery. They offer financing too. This made the most sense after looking around, however, I have a friend in the state so costs for travel will be minimal for us. To answer your first question...financing is available through most clinics, banks, credit companies. If your credit is not good though, this cost may be a huge burden. Do to the fact that success with donors is around 60%...I say look at a clinic that offers you the most for what you pay! Good luck.
