Use of Nexium and/or any PPI's during pregnancy

I suffer from severe GERD (gastroesophogeal reflux disease) plus erosive esophogus. I have been on many PPI's over the past 13 years, but have been taking Nexium for the past 2 years. There seems to be some differing opinions among some of my M.D.'s as to whether taking these meds during pregnancy is ok.

I am curious if any of you take any of these medications and what your M.D.'s say concerning these.

I have searched on the web and most articles I have found say it is ok, if necessary. One of my docs., RE, said no, but a resident M.D. working with him, said the new info. says it is fine if the patient has previously taken them. So, then, he said, I guess it's ok. My GI doc's nurse left me a msg. today saying, ask your OB, but scheduled me an appt. with the GI in April.

Can anyone offer any advice concerning this issue? Obviously, I don't want to harm any impending baby, but know that my problem is so severe that I have issues if I forget the med. for one day!

Thank you in advance for your information/advice!

I took generic Nexium pretty much my whole pregnancy with no problem. Everything I have read and all the medical professionals (RE, OB, GP, and nurses) I asked said it was okay.

Persephone and Neta,
Thank you so much for your replies! I need to call my OB this week to just double check. I know there is no way I can be pregnant without taking anything when I havd this many issues with taking meds. and not being pregnant. Do you remember your dosages of meds. you took? I already take 40 mg. of Nexium a day.

Thanks again!

My OB wouldn't let me take Prilosec or Nexium, but I was given Protonix. A couple of my due date buddies took Prilosec so I don't understand what the problem is. I can't remember exactly what they said but it had something to do with the "class" of Prilosec and Nexium...class C or something, which isn't advised during pregnancy.

Melissa,
Thanks for your reply! I talked to my OB's nurse yesterday and my OB approved me to continue on Nexium because it is a class "B" medication. The nurse told me they both looked it up together in the latest pharmaceutical book. Who knows, the classification on Nexium could have been revised recently. I trust my OB and her judgement... she is also a prof. at one of the medical schools!

I am happy to have feedback from people that also took PPI's or knew others that took them while pregnant! I am just worried that my issue is so bad, what is going to happen when I am pregnant????

Congratulations on your baby! Thanks again for responding to my question!
