should I care about donor's blood type?

My husband and I and our daughter, we all have same blood type, A+. And in my close family, everyone has A+ as well.

So I looked at my clinic's donor database, and there are only 2 (two) A+ donors. But based on the pictures they are very different from me. So if I went by pictures alone, they'd probably end up near the bottom of my list...

So, I'm tempted to ignore blood type and go by other physical characteristics.

For example, I suspect my mom has some prejudices, so I want her to bond with the baby first, before I tell her he/she is not genetically mine. So I want the donor to have genetical traits I could have passed on. My mom most likely won't get learn baby's blood type unless we tell her...

So, what's your take on blood type? Did you take it into consideration?

Do you consider it completely unimportant, or just somewhat? For example A is dominant over 0, so my husband and I could potentially have recessive 0 gene. Similar with RH-factor, which will increase my donor base to those with A- and 0- and 0+.

I never even considered blood type when choosing a donor.

My donor is a (+) and I am a (-) so I'll have to take shots. DH is a (+) too so I would have to take them too.

My RE said it didn't really matter. Maybe ask your RE office if it needs to be a factor in your decision making. I actually looked at a blood bank website a while back, just to see the combinations of blood type you get depending on the parents.

I don't even know my donors blood type.... wonder if I really need to? Maybe I'll ask next week at my appt. As for your mother.... why in the world would she EVER need to know the baby's blood type???? I wouldn't worry about that AT ALL!

No, health-wise it doesn't matter if you're the same or not. But, in some cases, when one person is negative and the other positive, you do need some sort of shot while you're pregnant. But, it's not a big deal.

I am a - dh is +. When I was pregnant with ds I had bleeding issues. Everytime I bled I ended up getting the Rohgam shot. Even if you don't have bleeding issues, if there is a difference between you and dh or the donor, you'd have to get the shot at 28 weeks. Then once the baby is born if he has your blood type you are ok, if not you get another shot. In my case, my ds has my blood type.

Well I talked to a sd clinic yesterday and they said it really doesn't matter as long as you go with a positive since my husband and I are positive. It really only matters if you choose to not tell your child that you used a donor, for medical reasons.

We didn't give it much thought when chosing our donor. We looked for medical background and put bloodtype last. DH and I are both A+ and our donor is O. I think that means that O is more universal???

We did choose a donor with a different blood type. We tried to find one that had the same as DH but his is fairly rare for caucasian men, so no go. In the end we both decided that we've never needed to know our own parents', so what's the chance this child would need to know? I had hoped that DD would have mine so it wouldn't ever matter, but in the end she ended up with the donor's blood type.

I think if everything else matters, blood type should be last on the list.
