How would you respond to this?

I was over my good friend's house. She is holding her three month year old baby and she says, "Aren't you happy your aren't pregnant right now? You would have to worry about this whole H1N1 thing."

I almost passed out. Doesn't she understand that I would love to be pregnant or have just had a child. And H1N1 would be the least of my worries. Urghhh!! I guess I can't expect everyone to understand.

Hi hon! First, what did you say to her or did you just not respond. People really don't understand. I have come to realize that those who have fairly easily gotten pregnant, just don't think. I doubt it's intentional, they just don't give any thought to how a little comment may hurt your feelings or make you cringe. I truly believe only those who have experienced some IF issues, (even if never had done intervention) can empathize and are more sensitive when discussing pregnancy, having babies, etc.

I'm not sure any response would have helped her to "GET IT". The only thing I can think of to say would have been... I'd love to be pregnant right now, however I know that with it being flu season that does give families with young children some additional concerns with germs!
KUP on what you decide about seeing an RE in ATL.

Really? What can you say to something like that? If she really is your friend then hopefully she realizes how careless her comment was, even if it was unintentional. A co-worker pretty much made the same comment to me. She asked me if I had kids and I said no and she went on to tell me how lucky I am that I dont have to deal with their nonsense. I could just sit and look blankly at her then when I got my wits about me I said to her, I would love to deal with their nonsense and that I have been waiting 9 long years to deal with "nonsense". Now admittedly, she doesnt know me and know what I have gone through but it just kills me how people dont think before they speak. I pretty much let it go and didnt give it another thought until now .. I hope you were able to do the same. *hugs*

Intentional?

I had this conversation before on here. I believe strongly that some people say such things unintentionally and some others...intentionally. People have debated me to no end stating "No one can be that cruel..." I live in the real world and yes, some people are that cruel and want to feel good about themselves and say such things to give you a joyful dig. Others, REALLY have no idea how their words hurt you. Only you know this friend. If she is supportive to your struggle most of the time...maybe she was trying to make you feel better completely missing how wrong she is. I am blessed that my best friend carefully chooses her words and would punch someone if they said something so cruel to me. (Not literally) She has held my hand, wiped my tears and hooked me up with our current doctor. My wish for you is to fill your life with THOSE kinds of friends, who do not make you second guess their intentions. Big hug!
