Dana-Maybe it is a girl, they did tell you kinda early what the sex was. MMMMM, interesting...LOL
U know up until I found out the gender, all my dreams were of having a boy. And since I found out, I haven't really had any baby dreams, just weird crazy dreams like almost being abducted by aliens...LOL

Well I had my anatomy scan yesterday, I saw all fingers and toes, heart looks good, brain looked fine,
stomach was full, and the tech said well we can see they are eating well I thought she meant the baby was fat already, and she said you could tell by the measurements the tummy was full and getting plenty of nutrients. Still measuring right on target and a little under a pound. For the exciting news of the sex!!!

Well we are having a

HE/SHE!!!!!

Baby was very uncooperative and I think he/she may have been sleeping. Baby was curled up with it's butt facing us, the tech poked and prodded my belly and it would not move. She even did a vaginal after she could not determine by the abdominal & still no luck. Perk to all of this is they were just hooking up a 3/D ultrasound at my office that they have been waiting to get for 5 years. At my next appt at 24 weeks I will be able to have another u/s done to check for sex and look at my placenta. Plaecenta is still a little low but it looks much better than at my 16 week appt. The tech said at my 16 week appt my placenta was covering my cervix completely and they thought I would end up with placenta previa, they never told me because they did not want to worry me. This time it had moved a lot and was on the edge of the cervix this time not covering at all. they still have to monitor it, so more u/s for me!!!

Danielle-Congrats on your he/she!!!...LOL

It's crazy that they only want to give us u/s only if they think there might be an issue. They should automatically do u/s at every visit.

Aww, Danielle, congratulations on your little he/she bundle!!! You seem okay with the outcome yesterday. You're right though, there isn't much else that can be done right now.

It is interesting that they could see that the baby was "eating" good. I'm a little worried b/c I haven't gained any weight yet (well, I was up 1/2 lb a few days ago, but that doesn't really count does it?) I'll be sure to ask at my anatomy scan where my placenta is and if the baby looks like it is getting the nutrients it needs.

So my nurse just called and scared the crap out of me. She said that we couldn't do the scan on Friday b/c the tech won't be there!!! I almost started crying. I'll be out of town the following 2 weeks and don't know if I could stand to wait that long. She offered me an appt tomorrow and of course I took it. I emailed DH to make sure he could come. Bummer! Turns out he couldn't make the appt tomorrow I guess it is sort of important for him to be there, right? LOL. So now it's Thursday instead. Happy medium really.

Am I the last one to go?

Good Luck with the anatomy scan!! you may be the last one to go, but I will be the last to find out the sex Even if you have not gained much, that does not mean anything with regards to the baby. The baby will feed off of you and what fat you already have. I have gained 6 lbs total so far, so not very much either. I was bummed at first, but I had to remember my little one was probably napping and we were probably interupting his/her routine.

What are the old wives' tales about how to make the baby more active during the scan? Is there something that I could eat or drink?

They say to drink orange juice. I was drinking all day, and the baby was very active all day, much more active than usual. Must of pooped out by the time of the u/s my appt was not until 3:00.
My next appt is in the morning so maybe that will help.

Its sounds like yesterday was a very eventful day for many of us! Congrats to everyone who had a scan yesterday - its sounds as though everything went well.

Eggy, to answer your question, the u/s took about an hour I think, and the tech this time was really nice (I thought the one I had before was nice, but she wasn't compared to this one). She started off checking out my uterus and cervix - I asked her if my cervix was still the right length (my paranoia of it being too short or something) and she said it was, at 4 cm. She said everything there looked good, and then she moved on to checking the placenta and umbilical cord. I had a really hard time seeing everything as it was kind of like looking upside down at a tv screen with your neck turned at an odd angle, but DH got a wonderful show from the baby, who was extremely active and moving all over the place. She said the umbilical cord looked good, she showed us (rather my DH) where it was attached, then looked at the placenta. She did mention that it was a little low lying, but not touching my cervix or anything, and that its still early and hopefully it will move up. Of course I already started to worry about it but am trying not to. She then went and checked his heart, and she showed us all 4 chambers and she watched it pump, and then she measured the heartbeat. I think after that she went on and looked at the kidneys, stomach, and then the spine. That was really cool, because she described each part of it to us. She then measured his femurs (they are a week ahead, which is not surprising since we are both really tall), showed us his shin bones, feet, ankles and toes. I think at that point she let me empty my bladder - since they made me come with a full one - and then she kept going. She checked his arms, hands, and then did facial features and his brain and skull. A lot of it was over my head as far as medical terms, etc., but I kept asking if it was looking right, and she would say yes. She even showed us him opening his mouth and swallowing, which was really cute. Then I think she ended with measuring the amniotic fluid and looking for my clot - which, like I said, she couldn't see (yay!). She then printed out a couple of pictures for us and gave us a CD to get real prints made at someplace like Walmart or Target if we wanted. Oh, and as far as finding out the sex - we hadn't been there but a few minutes and I said oh, by the way, we do want to know the gender, and we have been told its a boy. It was almost hilarious because she hadn't been doing the u/s for more then a minute or two and she said oh yeah, its a boy. All my worries that she was going to say it was a girl went out the window - she zoomed in and showed us the goods again, at which point I think my DH giggled. He made a comment last night that the poor kid keeps getting his teeny weenie viewed by everyone.

Sorry for the long post, just thought I would fill you in Eggy on what to expect, since I know I like to know what I am in for too!

Heather, you are awesome -- thank you for the fabulous overview! I am so glad everything looks great for your little guy. And it's also encouraging to hear that you went during your 19th week and got all this fantastic info -- your ER was two days ahead of mine, which puts us in the exact same place in terms of point of pregnancy at the anatomy scan. So, yay! So happy for you!

Is anyone else planning to breastfeed? I'm shooting for the first year personally, and I've just recently heard about the whole vitamin deficency thing...anyone else hear about this too? I figured that breastmilk had it all, but apparently breastfeed babies should be given a vitamin D supplement too. I first read about this while doing some research on line the other day, then it was on GMA this morning. Fortunatley, it looks like it is as easy as driving to a local Walgreens or CVS to get the drops though. According to GMAs report this morning as many as 50% of children aren't getting the vitamin D they need these days either. They are guessing this is largely due to the fact that kids just aren't getting outside like they should...stupid computer games!

Anyone else having really strange dreams? I've always had fairly vivid dreams, but they are getting downright bizarre lately. Last night I dreamt that I didn't feed the baby enough and my milk dried up. Dreams never have to make sense, so in the dream the baby was fine, but I just "forgot" to feed the baby...too weird! I guess that is a little bit of anxiety about being the mom to an infant.

I've been a part of my stepson's lives since they were 4 and 8, so I know how to parent from those ages up, but I have very limited experience with infants and young toddlers. I know I'll be fine, but are any of you first time moms feeling a little nervous too?

Speaking of children, I just sent my youngest DSS, now 11, out the door to his last day of elementary school. I remember his first day of kindergarten! It has just reminded me how fast time goes.

Danielle & Heather - Congrats on your scans. I thought it was so much fun to watch my little guys. Hopefully, Danielle, you will find out if you are having a boy or girl soon. That's when the fun begins and you can start reallly shopping.

Eggy - good luck with your scan. It's really not too early, I did mine at 17 weeks.

IFNovice - I ate cookies right before my scan and the babies were moving.

Melissa,

Me being a 1st time Mom, I am getting extremely anxious and paranoid. I just keep thinking to myself, what if I dont know what to do with an infant?LOL
How do I know if something is really wrong with the baby or he/she just has gas? I dont want to be one of those parents who call the Doctor for every little thing and become annoying. I guess a natural instinct will just kick in when the baby is here and you will learn as you go. The feelings you are having are perfectly normal and I'm sure almost all 1st time Mom's feel this way.

Eggy - good luck with your scan. It's really not too early, I did mine at 17 weeks.

IFNovice - I ate cookies right before my scan and the babies were moving.

Tammy, I know, I was so looking forward to going right after my u/s on Monday and buying the 1st pink or blue outfit. Right now I have a lot of yellows and greens but it will make it real once I know if it's a boy or girl. I am going to go crazy this next month

Hi ladies - I'm so glad to hear everyone's scans were so great! I'm looking forward to our anatomy scan on June 30 (so, Eggy, you're certainly not the last one!). I'll be at 21 weeks so should get a pretty good show.

We're also going in tomorrow for an u/s with our OB. My dad's in town and will come with us - it'll be fun to see his reaction as he's never seen an u/s before and this is his first grandchild.

I'm also going to ask my OB tomorrow about scheduling our 3D u/s. I'm really looking forward to that one!

Danielle - hang in there...I hope the next few weeks go quickly for you and you find out soon!
