Hope everyone's having a good day.

food

Hi Ladies,
I've been checking out this thread, but this is the first time I've posted. I was intrigued by some of your food questions. I don't eat a lot of red meat, but I hope I'm getting enough protein with ground turkey, eggs, chicken, etc.

Cathy- Are you eating turkey from the deli? I thought cold cuts were not recommended during pregnancy because of possible listeria.

I can't remember who asked about it, but I have been using Splenda. My RE said it was fine. I feel it's best to check with your doctor when you are unsure about something.

Hope everyone is feeling good!

I love splenda. It is okay to use. What you don't want is the aspartame or saccharine. But I still have a diet coke every now and then (or more).

I seriously wouldn't worry about trying to cut out fats and sugars and stuff now, especially if you are experiencing m/s. And yes, protein is important, but if you can't get it down, don't worry. The baby(s) is going to take whatever it needs from you. Once you start feeling better (2nd trimester) that is when you need to worry about a balanced diet.
Now, I just eat whatever I can. I can't stand the sight of meat some days and my only real source of protein now is cheese or the occasional glass of milk. I did have a salami sandwich once.

We went to Carrabbas last night and I had to have a ceaser salad. I know that with m/s you are supposed to avoid fried foods, but I had to have the mozzerella sticks and DH got calamari (I had a few). I seriously paid for it all night.

Oh, and all day today I have been tasting salt. I had a ice tea (w/ splenda...yum) from McD's this AM...that is the only thing I can think of. It feels like I have been licking a salt block. It is really gross. Make me produce a lot of saliva. Has anyone had anything like this? Or maybe I am going nuts...???

well I didn't know about the splenda, that's interesting. I stopped using it, and caffeine 4 months ago, no wonder I've gained weight.

Sour things tend to help me with the increased saliva thing.

Candace, congrats on your u/s!!

Denise, my RE told me I had to cut out all artificial sweeteners, including Splenda. I think it's probably out of an abundance of caution more than anything else.

Ana, LOL, I'm glad your symptoms are back only because it probably relieves your mind a little bit, but hope you feel better soon!

Hey Cathy, that's a great meal plan you have there. I should borrow a leaf from you since all I seem to crave are McDonald's fries and I rarely ever went to McD. b4 this.

Sorry you didn't feel well after the yummy food.

I read somewhere online that pregnant women produce more saliva. Crazy isn't it?

Good info on the artificial sweetners. I have been trying to avoid, but it sounds like once in a while it isn't bad.

As for the saliva, I have been having that too, I thought it was just the nausea.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

zofran is the bomb

I just have to say to anyone suffering bad m/s..ask your doc about zofran (it comes in cheap generic too.. onadesteron (sic)). It has improved my life 100 %. I am actually excited about my pregnancy again instead of just suffering thru it! Although I am a little worried about the constipation.. any tips?

Good morning ladies!

Okay re: Splenda and artificial sweetners. My dietician told me it's okay to have 1 packet a day (there was no splenda 8 years ago, so I used Equal). And if you have gestational diabetes, trust me, you will use that 1 packet a day because you can't have sugar in anything else. Splenda gives me headaches so I have stuck with the equal.

I'm trying to stick to this diet now and believe it or not, it has minimized my nausea. I think the small frequent meals is key. I find that if I overeat or if I'm starving is when the queasiness and nausea are the worst. I think the snack before bedtime has really reduced my morning sickness.

Getting back to GD- not to say any of you will get it, but I had it and this is what my diet was like when I was pregnant with my DD for the first 2 trimesters: We ate out frequently and I had no portion control. I was constantly sucking down cokes and vanilla fribbles from Friendly's because they were the only 2 things that made me feel better. I definitely wasn't informed as much as now 8 years ago and I was eating Italian Subs, french fries galore, tuna fish, swordfish, you name it. I really lived by the eating for two and eat whatever you want. So I think I definitely paid for it. Diabetes doesn't run in my family and I wasn't overweight (I've been 5'2" and about 115-119 pounds ever since I can remember) so I was surprised when I was diagnosed with it. My DD is healthy, thank goodness.

Jen- haven't heard about the saliva or salt thing but I guess with pregnancy, any kind of weird things can happen.

Lauren- the coldcut thing is definitely new since I had my DD 8 years ago. I don't know if I can cut it out completely as I only have 2 slices (2 ounces) and I don't have it every day.. I get my turkey fresh sliced at the deli and if you microwave it until steaming (I don't do it) then it's safe to eat. But I would make sure it's at least fresh sliced and not been sitting already sliced. If you want an alternative, you can roast your own turkey breast and slice it up for sandwiches. That's just as good too!

If you want other options for meat/protein: You can have chicken salad (love it), cottage cheese, peanut butter, eggs. You can even have limited shrimp, lobster and other shellfish.

Regarding milk, my OB was always adamant that I get enough calcium because your baby needs the calcium to build it's bones, etc. It's true that the baby pulls what it needs from you, but if you become depleted, you end up with osteoporosis. She told me that many women right after childbirth are diagnosed with osteoporosis from not taking enough calcium during pregnancy. So it was either take the pills or drink the milk. I hate taking pills. 4 oz here or 6 oz there isn't hard to do, you just get used to it. I used to work with nurses who would have 1 glass of milk with each meal like it was water. They were a good influence on me and made it easier.

As for the sample diet I gave, anyone can definitely borrow from it-it's definitely healthy and balanced. I definitely still splurge but only occasionally because I pay for it. Just check with your RE or dietician because depending on your body size and how many beans you're carrying, you may need more calories. My diet was a 2,000 calorie diet.

Have a great weekend!!!
