Ectopic with IVF

Last Thursday I had a lap and D & C to remove an ectopic pregnancy in my left tube at 7w2d. Long story short, I went through IVF in June, BFP on June 30, but then numbers began is rise to slowly and I was told to stop progesterone. My numbers continued to rise eventhough the u/s showed no viable pregnancy in the uterus at 5w2d. A week later my numbers were continuing to rise, another u/s confirmed that there was still no sac in the uterus. The next day (Thursday) they gave me a shot of Methotrexate. The following Wednesday I began to experience pain in my lower abdomin but I figured I could wait it out since my appt was the following morning. They immediately did an exam and u/s which showed fluid and a mass that wasn't there the week before. I was sent straight to surgery where they had to remove my left tube. So, my question is how common is this with IVF? Should I worry about this happening again with my right tube? Is anyone at fault or is this just some freak thing? I would love to hear from those of you who have had ectopics with IVF and the success that came later. I know this is all so fresh to me... I don't even have the stitches out yet, but we really want to move on and create a family. Is it safe to try again? This would be IVF #4. I have been with the same RE and I absolutely adore him. I have gotten prego 2 out of 3 times and I have been diagnosed with new issues along the way. I trust he is doing what is best for me and would love to stay with him. Am I crazy?

I am sorry for what you had to go through! I just found out today that I have an ectopic, or so they think. I had an u/s this morning and no sign of a little bean in or around my uterus. My ovaries were still too big for them to see my tubes. RE called this afternoon with beta and it went up to 2,029 today. He is pretty sure it's ectopic.
I go in tomorrow for the Methotrexate injection.
Did you have any side effects from it because I have read some that are just terrible? And I would love to know answers to some of the same questions you had. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will answer!
This is my first IVF with my RE, but multiple IUI's and I'm wondering if I should stay or find another. I do like him and he is close to me, so it's a hard decision. I don't know what to tell you about yours, other than do what you feel is best for you and DH. Guess I should take my own advice. I hope you're doing okay. I know it's hard! I have cried all day and my DH is in Iraq and doesn't even know yet. He knows about not finding anything, but not about the ectopic. I am not looking forward to telling him tomorrow.
Take care!

Steph - I know exactly how you feel and I am sorry you have to go thur this... I am sure you read the previous parts of the thread and saw my story..
Same thing with me - my ovaries were so big that they could never get a good look in my tubes. Just be happy they are catching it early enough and you won't have to have surgery.

I have heard a couple of different explanations... one is that ectopic don't occur in people with healthy tubes. The other has to do with the fluids that are injected with the embryos during the transfer. Who really knows???

I will say a prayer for you -

Ladies-
I know exactly what your going thru...

I had an ectopic almost one year ago. It was not thru IVF though, natural conception. My RE did mention he does see it with IVF sometimes which supports the research that ectopics are more due to an abnormality in the egg, which causes it to seek the ovaries...who knows though.

Anyways, for you who is having the metho shot, I didn't really have any side effects. Be sure to be very aware of any symptoms you are having. Not to freak you out, but the shot is not 100%. Be aware of any cramps, excess bleeding, rectal pain, lower back pain. All of these starting happening to me about 4 days after my shot. Ended up in the ER for emergency surgery. My left tube partially ruptured. They remove the fetus, and saved my tube.

Now the future...At that time, I was so frustrated that this happened because of what I thought this would do to my future fertility. If I had problems before this, what odds did I really have of EVER getting pregnant....now here's the kicker.

We had to wait 3 months before trying again (due to the shot). Did maybe 3 cycles with Letrozole and decided to try in Feb. IUI with injectabiles (for the first time). I was really bummed when they did my scan and found that all 4 follies were on my left tube (my "bum" tube). Went ahead with things and now I am 25 weeks pregnant with twins.

I have no idea why the egg got stuck a year ago, and this time not only one but two made it thru that same tube (that now has some level of damage due to the surgery).

I will never understand it, but I hope you take from this that it is possible...and the odds of it happening again are very, very small.

Best of luck to you both!

I am so sorry you are dealing with this! I too had an ectopic over one year ago with IVF (actually donor embryo). It was so sad. I know the feelings you are dealing with.
I had surgery and had both tubes ligated at that time. I know that might seem a bit drastic, but due to my age and the fact we were not using my eggs anyway my RE and I both decided this was the best for me. She did say that ectopics are rare with IVF and I was just "unlucky".
I want you to know there is hope after ectopic! I have an almost 10 mo old daughter now and I am preparing for a FET in Sept.
Allow yourself to work through your grief. It does take time, but know you absolutly can have the baby of your dreams!
