First of all I am so sorry to hear about your ectopic pregancy. I know it must be a difficult time. When I had mine a few years ago, I did the methotrexate shot and was fine. I am also someone who reacts badly to almost all medicines and I had no side effects from the shot. I had the shot in mid-August and was able to do IVF at the end of October and got pregnant with my now 3 year old daughter. What does your RE say about having surgery? If it were me, I would try the shot first, but if your doctor thinks he or she can clear up your other issues at the same time, it might be worth it to have surgery. It is definitely a hard decision. Good luck with whatever you decide. I also wish you luck with your future cycles!

I am also very sorry for you...(((HUGS))) My first pregnancy resulted in an Ectopic. I also do not do well with drugs, I took the shot it wasn't bad at all. The three months are over before you know it, and the healing from surgery might be way more awful than the shot. Good luck to what ever you decide....

This is such a tough decision and I know exactly what you are going through! Two weeks ago we opted to have the shot (which was not bad at all), but I still had to have the surgery last Thursday. If I knew then what I know now, I would have opted to go straight to surgery. I guess the problem is you never know the outcome until you reach that point. Definitely have a long hard talk with your RE. Mine told me the drug is most effective when administered before the HCG reaches 1500. Mine was at around 700 when given and it didn't work. RE thinks it may not have been getting good blood supply so my numbers almost tripled in a week. You have to follow your heart. I also have a blood clotting disorder so anything to avoid surgery has to be tried first. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide. I have to agree with Cathi, three months will be over before you know it, even though three months right now seems like a lifetime away! Keep us updated.

Thank You!
I appreciate all your insights and thoughts concerning my question. I did go ahead and have the shot yesterday because my RE said he would not be able to clean up any endo or polyps at this time, he would have to do it at another time. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be! I just hope it works because I know it doesn't for many ladies. It is reassuring to see some of you have gone on to have babies, so that's great!
KelB - are you doing IVF again? We are, so if you are too we might be doing it again at them same time. Let me know! Thanks again ladies!!

Yes, I think we will. I told my RE on Friday at my post surgery checkup that we will so we can make sure we are scheduled to do so and don't have to wait longer. I think that would put us on schedule around the middle to end of October. I am sure it will depend on when they are cycling! Hope that the methotrexate works well for you! Keep me up to date on when you will begin your next IVF.

I would highly suggest trying the shot first. I had no real side effects from it.
I don't know if you have discussed with your doctor, but many times that will give you the shot even if you have the surgery. They give it to take care of anything that may be left over. They did that to me (I ended up having surgery due to a partially ruptured tube...my first shot didn't work). The three months will go back quickly...and recovering from the surgery is not a fun couple of weeks. Best of luck to you.

Hey KelB-
They have been taking my betas and told me to expect the first one to go up and it did - it tripled! Then another beta today and it went up another 1,000. They are going to do an u/s in the morning tomorrow and if the RE sees anything he doesn't like, he will go ahead and do surgery tomorrow. I have had on and off extreme pain all week, but today it seems to have let up some. I just don't know. I would kind of like to go ahead and have the surgery just so I know it is all taken care of and I don't have to worry anymore. I start back to school in 2 weeks, so that would give me enough time to recover and not miss any school. The nurse said that if they do decide to only do the metho tomorrow, they will check my beta again on Tues and if it doesn't have a drastic change downwards, my RE would do the surgery then. So, I would just rather go ahead and have the surgery and be done with it! I really appreciate you checking up on me. It has been a hard week!! How are you doing??? This is a really tough process and only those going through it understand! I kind of took a break this week on here, but I am back now. Take care and it was great to hear from you! I hope you are doing great!

Oh, I am so sorry! I really hope that things begin to look up for you. If you have to have to surgery, for me it wasn't too bad. I was out of commission for a few days, but I think I may have just been more depressed than in pain!! Anyway, please keep me updated. I have been thinking about you and wondering if things were going o.k.

Hey Kel-
I ended up having a 2nd dose of metho yesterday. He did an u/s and did find some fluid in my abdomen. He scheduled me for surgery on Monday, but my hubby is coming home from Iraq on Tues morning, so I asked if it we could do the surgery on Tues afternoon. My RE said if we wait we do take a chance, but since we are waiting, he's going to take my betas on Tues and went ahead and just scheduled me for surgery on Wed morning. If my betas go way down on Tues, he won't do the surgery on Wed. I guess it's a gamble we are taking waiting, but hopefully my numbers will go down. I tell you...this 2nd dose of metho is bad!! I have been really sick, like having the flu since last night. I am so ready to be done with all this!!! I want to be able to start moving on! How are you doing???

I took the shot in May, and it did make my hormones increase temporarily until they finally came down. I had morning sickness due to the increased hormones for the next two days. However, it took three weeks after the shot for my levels to go down again.

Hey Kel-
This is my first time on since the middle of August. I don't even know if you are still checking this but I thought I would try and see. I did end up having emergency surgery. He was able to save my tube. Ended up with C Diff which a nasty intestinal infection, so I was out of comission for a while. Haven't really felt like talking or thinking about it until now. I met with my RE today and we are thinking of trying again. Did you know you have an increased risk of having another ectopic? I just didn't realize it. He said if I got pregnant naturally that we have like a 15 - 20% chance of having another tubal. I don't know if he is telling me this to try and get me to do IVF again or not. I am going to do more research. I hope you are doing good. Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. Take care!
