Question about ectopic pregancies...

Hey, I just found out I have an ectopic pregnancy, and we are trying to avoid surgery by using the chemicals (shot).

My question is, if I have surgery, would that mean they would definitely remove the tube?

My doctor said he wants to do an HSG after the pregancy is over to see if my tube is clear (I had one three years ago, and the left tube was found to be blocked, but this pregnancy is in the right tube).

We were hoping to possibly pursue fertility treatments in two or three years (we are currently adopting a baby girl), and now I am worried we will have to skip less invasive methods and go straight to the IVF route.

So sorry to hear about the ectopic pregnancy. I know that must be so disappointing.

My cousin had an ectopic pregnancy a few years ago. She had the surgery and they did not remove the tube. So, to answer your question, it isn't always necessary to remove the tube. I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

Any news on when your daughter will be hope from Guatemala? I wish you the best of luck with your upcoming adoption.

Thanks, that is good to know that sometimes the tube can stay.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for bringing our daughter home by the end of July (we have one more major step), but the attorney estimated August or September.

Guatemalan adoption is a bit unpredictable, but the average time span is 6-9 months. Our daughter will be six months old in July.

more questions

Hi, my name is Kris and I live in Fairbanks, AK. I have one beautiful baby girl who is 27 months old. The first time I got pregnant within 3 months, I was 34. Now I am 37 and we were trying for Baby #2 and on March 21 I found out I was pregnant and on March 22 had a mini laparotomy for a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. It was the craziest thing, other than age I have no risk factors whatsoever. And the weirdest thing is that I did not even know I was pregnant! I believe the conception date was 8 or 9 Feb, and I was 2 days late on my period so I took a home pregnancy test that was negative. Then later that day I got my period, which lasted 3-4 days, no change in the color of the blood, just like usual. No nausea, no vomiting, no dizziness. So I just figured it did not work out that month and we would try again next month. I work in the ER and so am pretty up on signs and symptoms of bad things. In about mid march I had some very faint bleeding, like just a bit of bright red blood on the toilet tissue, maybe 4 or 5 days. I also had some urinary urgency, and some bloating, and started freaking out because if I was not pregnant then maybe this meant I had ovarian tumor or something bad. So I made an appointment with my OB/GYN to have further workup for this. I made the appointment for March 23. On March 21 I was at work in the ER, 1/2 way thru my 12 hour shift when I just started feeling really bad. I had lots of cramping and was almost doubled over. My period pains are never like that, so I told the MD I was working with and she drew a pregancy test and it was POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!! Imagine my shock, thinking this whole month that I was not pregnant! Well, anyway, she said maybe I was miscarrying, that she would set me up for a pelvic ultrasound in the morning. So I went home, laid down, and about 3 hrs later woke up to this excruciating right shoulder pain. Right then I knew exactly wnat it was! shoulder pain is a tell tail sign of ruptured ectopic. I think I was in denial, still thinking there was no way I could have an ectopic! I showed up at the ER< got ultrasounded, and then whisked off to surgery. They removed part of my right tube, and she said my left tube looked fine, and she felt I would be able to conceive in the future. I am just so beside myself now from all of this that I do not know what to think. I would like to hear from other women who have conceived after ectopic. How long did it take? Did you have part of or your whole tube removed? Or what is the next step if you did not conceive? Has anyone done IVF? As far as I know, I dont have a problem getting pregnant, my husband's sperm count is fine, and I have no abnormalities of my uterus that I know of. Last time it took 3 or 4 months to conceive, this time only 2 months. I just dont know what to think and know we want to have at least one, maybe two more children and would like to know what my options are. WOuld love to hear from anyone who has any advice on this, Thanks for listening, KRis

Hi glaciegirl,

I had an ectopic in my right tube in Jan 08. I already knew that my right tube was blocked so I suspected this from the beginning. My tube ruptured while I was in my OB office and we did emergency surgery. I was told to wait until I had had 2 periods before trying again. We got pregnant the first time, mind you we had be trying for 4 months before the 1st, and most of our relationship we haven't done anything to prevent getting pregnant, so it took me almost 2 years to get pregnant to begin with. The 2nd pregnancy was also an ectopic but in my left tube this time. They were able to save the tube, and said that the baby had almost made it this time, really close to the uterus. The first one was right at the end, almost blew up my ovary the Dr said. We have decided to try again one more time naturally, even if it's another ectopic, and even if my tube ruptures, we figure will be right back at square one with IVF, so what the heck. Emotionally I'm a rock compared to most, otherwise I don't think I could try for a 3rd time knowing that I'm at the 50% range now of having another one.

IVF is definitely the best option for ladies with our problem and not sure where you are from but there is a clinical trial that could save you thousands should you have to go that route.

Here is a link about the trial, it's in it's 3rd phase, so you aren't in the guinea pig stage. It's already been through all that and now they are just comparing it to what is already on the market.

If you decide to try again naturally, my 1st Dr. whose supposedly known for being super conservative said to wait for 2 periods before trying again, but the Dr that did this one said 6months and I didn't get the shot to take care of the ectopic. So I don't know if he said that because I've had 2 within 3 months, or if he tells everyone that.

Hope this helps. :-)
