Questions on loss

Im trying to keep busy..but this is so horrible, I just want it to be over with. I have to go back and have blood work to make sure the number goes back to 0? I have not been able to bring myself to ask them any questions because I burst out crying if I have to talk about it. So when can I expect to start bleeding or get my period is it usually when it goes back to 0? Or if it doesnt go back to 0 do they do a D&C or do I have to take that metho shot???

I think I'm missing a post here. Did you have a beta that came up with a positive beta? My bleeding started the same afternoon that I received my methotrexate injection. It took me two weeks for my number to go back to zero but because of the shot I have to wait three months before trying again. Since I didn't have a D&C I can't answer your question on that topic. I'm sorry for your loss, I know it's difficult but cry if you need to - sometimes that helps you to heal.

I think I missed a post too....sorry. When I had my mc last year, I bleed off on on for about 3 weeks. But, it was probably another 3 weeks before my beta went to 0. But I did not have an ectopic...is that what you had?

Yes, Jen it was a low positive and went down on my second test. I just wanted to know what to expect if it doesn't go to 0 on its own. I see I posted this under etopic..my mistake, they haven't told me this was etopic (thankfully it sounds very scary to me).

If your beta wasn't very high to begin with it doesn't have as far to go to get back to zero. Hence the reason mine only took two weeks versus a couple of months. It probably was actually done to zero within a week and a half because on Tuesday the 27th it was at 11 which was a full week after my shot. He had me wait another week before coming back in and due to being busy at work I didn't make it in until the end of the week. Having a low first beta that drops on the second could also be a chemical pregnancy (I hate that term) which could mean that while fertilization happened implantation may not have. That means that once your lining starts to shed your beta will drop very quickly because there are no pregnancy cells anywhere left to grow. That's what my doctor said anyway. We don't know what my case was since we weren't able to see anything on the OB's ultrasound. Now if I had gone to my RE it may have been a different story.

I had a similar situation and about a week after the numbers dropped is when I started bleeding. I went from 180 to 130 to 70. I don't recall needing to test to determine if I went to 0.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. We are all here for you.

Very sorry to hear your news. When my beta was 31, and then dropped to 9 in 2 days, there was nothing else I needed to do. I didn't even have to test for a 0 beta, af came and that was then end of that cycle. I started ivf again a couple months later. Good luck to you, you are in my prayers.

Thanks ladies,
I guess everybody is different. My beta was low to begin with but only dropped a 1/4 of a point after 3 days. So I am guessing this will be a long process if nothing has started happening yet.

If your numbers do not start dropping on their own your doctor may want to consider a D&C or the methothrexate shot. My numbers continued to slowly climb, even after two rounds of shots. I had surgery and my numbers dropped a lot in a short amount of time. I was checked a few weeks later and my beta was down to 2 (the doctor said that's close enough to be considered 0).

I'm with you

It's so great to see this thread and realize that I'm not alone -- not that I would wish this on anyone. My betas went from 73 to 37 to 23 -- and they called it a chemical pregnancy, everyone expected it to go to 0 pretty quick. Then, the next week, I got a 115. My RE was very worried about ectopic, so they sent me for a high def ultrasound. That didn't find anything. Next week I got a 557 and another high def u/s and they saw a gestational sac. The radiologist actually told me it looked good! And then my RE told me she should not have said that bc she misinterpreted the number of weeks that I am and that I had a nonviable pregnancy. The good news is that what I had is in my uterus. I went in today and my number is 1600, plus my body is now producting progesterone and I have a corpus luteum in one of my ovaries. However, the pregnancy is still unequivocably non-viable but my body is not miscarrying. My RE said there are two options - a drug called cytotec (kind of like RU 486), which is inserted vaginally and causes a miscarriage (only side effects are supposed to be cramping, bleeding and diarhea) - or waiting. I'm worried about waiting bc I have the feeling that it will continue to grow and then be more painful for either the cytotec later on or if I would need a D&C. My RE said if it was his sister or wife, he would recommend doing the cytotec now, so I'm going in tomorrow for them to insert it (they said they are better able to be sure it is inserted correctly). Then, because I have negative blood, I have to get a shot called Rogam so that my body does not produce antibodies. My RE said after the cytotec I can try again to get pregnant right away after my next menstrual period. Has anyone heard of this? It has been really hard so my thoughts are with everyone who has gone through this. I have nausea and generally feel pregnant and it's really hard to know that while I am pregnant, it's not meant to be.
Chris

ssamino- so sorry you are going through this, this experience is horrible and still trying to cope. If I had been given a choice I would have gone through a D&C, they did not prepare me for what a natural miscarriage would be like and I feel like I will never be the same. I hope that someday this will be easier to deal with. I can only pray now for a miracle because we can't afford to continue with treatment.
