Are Bi-racial or African Amer. Embryos hard to find?

My DH and I have been put on a waiting list for Embryo Donation at our clinic. I lost my baby boy at almost 17 weeks. A year and a half after that I had a cancelled IVF cycle and one converted to IUI, but did not get pregnant. I had previous IUI's with my regular OB, one resulted in pregnancy but I miscarried at 8 weeks. I am now losing hope because I have read some places that Bi-Racial and/or African American donated embryos are rare? Is this true? If so I am wondering why my clinic did not tell us so. We asked how long it would take to be matched and she told us it usually takes about 2 months. I did ask our nurse coordinator in the beginning if it would take longer because of ethnic background, and she said not necessarily. After reading things about the rarity I am beside myself.
I left my nurse a message this afternoon to ask if this was true and I am waiting to hear back. Has anyone here used donor embryos of another race, and was it a long wait? I had hope that I would be able to have a baby this way but now I am feeling it all slip away. We cannot afford to do adoption, or go through the agencies because of the cost. I am just so upset.

Both the National Embryo Donation Center (NEDC) and Snowflakes have multiracial embryos they're trying to place!

Many more places have them as well. Just call around and ask.

I also have to say, many clinics have long waits for embryos period. It depends on their clients and who is willing to donate their remaining embryos.

Finding a donor clinic:

To find a clinic in your area that handles Donor Embryos, click here: SART - Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology and enter your zipcode. Click on a clinic name and then click to view their ART data report. At the bottom of the report, it will tell you if they work with Donor Embryos or not. Of these clinics, some have their own in-house supply of Embryos and some require that you locate your own elsewhere and then have them shipped to the clinic. Contact each clinic for details on which options they offer.

Sometimes clinics will work with donor embryos, even if they don't have an in-house program. So you can still contact clinics in that list and double check. A quick phone call is worth a lot.

In addition, please be sure to ask who they use for Cryogenic storage etc. Many clinics who do not have a program, refer their clients to the cryogenics places, as many cryogenics places DO have their own donor embryo programs.

In my experience, I was told that African-American and Biracial children are more rarer than other races BUT that doesn't mean its impossible to find one. You just have to be willing to wait a little longer or be open to working with an agency. I choose not to work with an agency because they are expensive and they were not very happy about working with singles and gay folks.

I'm open to embryos of any race and I was warned that there is a STRONG possibility that the embryos would be Caucasian. I have met a few black single women and lesbians who have used sperm donors of a different race because of the same situation.

I'm open to any as well which I thought would be no problem. I just end up with some families who prefer that their embryos go with a family of the same race. I'm not interested in sperm donors so I'm just waiting for a family thats as open as I am.

I've seen some multi-racial embryos on Nightlight. I'm not into paying all the fees or else that would be the direction I would move in. I recommend looking at them, though, they are looking to place them.

I'm sure you'll find your embryos soon.

I already looked into Nightlight and I choose not to use them because they are expensive and they are not single women/gay friendly. Their social worker told me that they couldn't deny my application because California law forbids them from doing so but they did mention that my chances of being matched were slim.

I also asked them about their AA embryos and she claimed that the donating parents were only interested in married, heterosexual couples.

Really? Wow. I was only aware of the longer wait time. They're weren't on my list but this just makes them seem that much worse for not even trying to give hope. Sorry.
