Red face Newbie--Need Advice on Laparoscopy to Remove Adhesions

I am new to forums and I’m really looking for some good advice. My hubby and I have a healthy almost 5yr old, no problems conceiving him. He was delivered via c-section. We’ve been trying to get pregnant for about 3 years now. I did about 5 rounds of Clomid, nothing. Had an HSG about a year ago, no blockage. We recently began seeing a fertility doctor, and are in the middle of that now. All my tests have come back normal, except when the doc did the ultrasound she saw some fluid that is either in or around my right tube. So now she has recommended Laparoscopy for diagnosis. She said this was to go in and remove some adhesions, and to remove my right tube. This is what’s really bothering me. Why is she saying the tube needs to come out before she’s even gotten in there and looked? Frankly I’m not keen on having surgery to just look in the first place, but how can you say the tube has to come out right now? Again, she cannot tell from the HSG or the ultrasound scans if the fluid is in the tube or around, and even if it’s in the tube, can that just be flushed out? I guess I just don’t understand why removing it is an option? I don’t have pain from it; she said I might in the future. If everything else is fine (hubby goes for sperm analysis next week) then why take it out?

Guess you all can tell I’m not to keen on the idea of removing the tube. I asked the doc if this increases my chances of conceiving, she said yes and no. She said well you’re chances of conceiving are lower because you wont have the tube and you’ll only be using one side, but if you do get prego, then your chances of keeping it and not miscarrying are better. WTF, I’ve never had problems before, isn’t that something we should just wait and see about? I know people who’ve gotten pregnant, and their doctors even knew they had a blocked tube, which wasn’t removed, they still got prego and everything was fine.

Anyhow, any advice is welcome, except please don’t tell me it’ll happen if it’s suppose to, or I should be happy I even have one child. Of course I’m happy I have a child, and I wish everyone luck in their quest. I’m just looking for others who may have had the surgery or can otherwise give me some good advice. Thanks!!

I went through pretty much the same thing you are going through. I have a 4 year old DD, who I also had via c-section. We ttc for about 2 years with no luck. My OB referred us to my RE, who started me on clomid and then ran the HSG test. Everything looked fine during that, but I had an u/s about a day or two later and the nurse saw a strange pooling, which she said might be endo. RE said he didn't think it was endo, since I didn't have any record during c-section and no symptoms. We elected to do the lap to remove the adhesions he figured were there. Once he got in there, he found severe endo. He cleaned me up as best he could, trying to free my tubes and removing a large endometrioma from my right ovary. After finding all that, he recommended we go straight to IVF. I did one cycle, but had empty follicle syndrome (probably due to another endometrioma on the left ovary). I had another lap in May to remove that endometrioma and began another IVF cycle in June. We decided to cancel, because I wasn't responding as well to the meds. We are going to try another IVF cycle in Sept.

As for the fluid that may be in your tube, I have seen other women on here say that it can stop embryos from implanting in the uterous. I don't know much about that, but I bet you can find a lot of info. on here and on the web.

I understand your fear about having the lap. There is a lot of varied research on whether it is a good or bad thing to do. I would recommend you do your research, ask a ton of questions, and make the decision that you feel is best for your family. I would just be careful on how long you wait to take action. After all I have been through, I am a firm believer that it is better to be aggressive. If I could change things, I would have started having children a lot sooner, or at least went for help sooner.

Good luck,
Christy

HI.... hmmm it sounds a bit strange that they are saying that they already want to take it out??? My first lap was diagnostic only so even thou she found ENDO she didn't remove it. 3 yrs down the track it was worse, everywhere!!! so my new dr, said she would go in and depending on what she found whould take .... and gave examples. She ended up taking massive amounts of ENDO out. Have another chat to your DR, ask loads of questions... if you are really concerned there is nothing wrong with a second opinion. Wishing you luck.

lol i learn something new everyday...my re thinks i have a tube that is blocked by fluid but they never mentioned anything about taking it out...i managed to get preggo on my 2nd round of clomid but i then lost the pregnancy and they had no explanation but i wonder if it was related to that...if so i would think i (just my own experience)would rather have the darn tube removed than go thru the pain of miscarrying again..the tube that isn't blocked is what allowed me to get preggo so what good is the one that is blocked doing me...building character i guess lol
good luck to you hope you are able to find a solution that works for you
best wishes
naomi
ps also mention i had a completely healthy pregnancy that resulted in my 2 yr old ds...is possible i guess that you don't need to remove the tube and tell them that and let you try to conceive before any irreversible actions are taken, possible you may conceive and have another wonderfully healthy pregnancy.(i hope that for you)
if you haven't already research hydrosalpinx then make your decision ...it is yours to make..good luck
