Fertility question

Hello FertiliryCommunity,

After searching the net about fertility I found out that woman can ovulate only 12-16 days before menstruation. So according to this she is fertile 8-17 days before menstruation. Is this 100 % true? I suppose not, but all the scientific researches prove that is it true and I am preaty confused.

Thanks,

Boby.

Hi Bobby,

I don't believe all the books about ovulation, as I ovulate on day 10! Finally, my RE's office realized I wasn't lying after I was on injectables and they monitored me very closely. I am not pregnant with twins!

Good luck to you!

P.S. I have 3 friends who read the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility", and they all ovulate on different days. One is on day 11, another on day 15 and another on day 17! They all have beautiful children as well!

Taking Charge of Your Fertility, as previously mentioned, is a great way for a woman to understand the signs and symptoms of ovulation.

For me? I ovulate differently each month. One cycle is short with early ovulation and the following cycle is long with later ovulation. It took awhile to learn my own cycle well enough to determine ovulation.

I'm with Jenna. My cycles are pretty clockwork as far as when to expect AF to show up. But ovulation can occur at different times for me. Anywhere from CD12-15 just depends on the cycle.

SchmennaLeigh, if your cycle is different every month, how do you predict the fertile period? If the cycle is constant (as my partner's is 28 days) will be the calculation (duration of cycle - luteal phase = ovulation day) accurate 99% to determine the fertile period?

jenedens6102 you posted while I was writting reply, so I didn't read your post. If it's varying 3 days that's not problem becuase you can be sure which 9 days you can become pregnant and thich 21 days you cant, but if it's varying more than 3 days it can be problem.

I was always told that you can only conceive within a certain window after ovulation and it certainly isn't 9 days, that's too long. The luteal phase needs to be between 10-12 days to ensure that if conception occurs the egg has time to travel down and implant while the lining is still thick and rich. We were told we had three most fertile days. Using ovulation predictors will help determine when those days are for you guys. Once I got a surge I was told to BD that day, the next and the following - all three days for maximum potential. Some will say every other day, just depends on which doctor or clinic you visit.

You need to learn ovulation signs and symptoms which are available to learn on the internet or in greater detail in Taking Charge of Your Fertility. I charted (and will again) my basal body temperature (BBT) every morning upon waking up. I had to pay attention to my cervical mucous to look out for egg white cervical mucous (EWCM) which is your fertile mucous. In the beginning, before I got a hang of my mucous and the fluctuations in my BBT due to a kidney disorder, I also used ovulation predictor kits. I didn't need them after a few months because I was able to rely on my temping, mucous and charting methods.

It's also a myth that cycles are regularly 28 days. Mine are 22-25 on month one followed by 33-37 the second month and back to month one the following.

Edited to Add: You are not fertile for nine days every month.

You didn't understood me, I wanted to say that if the period in constant and the luteal phase vary 3 days you can be sure which 9 days out of for example 28 you CAN be fertile, but now I see that it depends of many factors. But what do you think about the day before bleeding? Is it possible for the luteal phase to be as short as 1 day?

I've never heard of a one day luteal phase. Anything less than 7-10 days is actually seen/diagnosed as a luteal phase defect. (More info here: Ovusoft Fertility Glossary)

No a luteal phase (from ovulation to period) needs to be longer as there is more to do. It was explained to me in this fashion since my cycles are typically 28 days long: For the first 9-10 days of the cycle (from the start of mensus on) the follicle is beginning to develop and prepare for ovulation, then ovulation occurs as the egg is released into the fallopian tube. This is when you want to conceive so that it's got amble time to fertilize, grow and divide properly. Once it reaches the end of the fallopian tube and is out into the uterus it still has to journey down before attaching to the uterine wall. The lining needs to be thick and rich with blood to nourish this newly implanted embryo. This is why if you don't conceive you'll normally expect your period about 12-14 days after ovulation. For me I didn't temp or check my mucus too much because I have the blessing (or curse depending on how you want to look at it) where I can actually feel when I'm about to ovulate and we work on it that way. It was always right in line with the OPKs I used.

So, according to this, the intercourse on the day before menstruation cannot lead to pregnancy?
