cost of initial testing

My insurance doesn't cover infertility diagnosis or treatment. Does anybody have some rough estimates as to how much the initial tests (FSH, SA, HSG) run?

It may be possible to get some of the initial tests covered by your insurance. It will depend on what s/he puts on the requisitions. There are other reasons to have hormonal blood work, hsg and a u/s that are not only for infertility.

Yes, I agree with this. My insurance also does not cover IF treatments, but they did pay for the testing I had done. My Dr. did not put IF as the diagnosis (I can't remember what she used...I think it was annovulation). Best of luck to you.

I'm pretty sure my insurance covers IF except for IVF, but all my treatments have been billed as surgery (the HSG), pathology, and x-ray. Talk to your doctor or the office manager to see if they can use some creative billing to help you out. Good luck.

Hello..

My insurance does not cover infertility treatments either. I just had the HSG test done today, with a follow-up right after with my RE.. going over the results and an ultrasound done. The cost for today was $1000. I do not know how much of that was just the test vs. the office visit, but i'm assuming the test was the bulk of it.

Our insurance provider offers infertility coverage, but my husbands employer did not opt to get it so therefore we don't have the option. It's so very frustrating.. Cost is a big issue.. We're just hoping we can have success without needing IVF, etc.. but if we do we'll find a way, I'm not giving up!

I wish you lots of luck!

I haven't received the bill yet for my HSG, but my initial office visit (about ten minutes) was $200. My bloodwork was $180. I assume the HSG will be at least $1000. Nothing covered by insurance. It sucks, but it will be worth it if I have a baby.

So, the bill arrived. $2,449, NONE of it covered by insurance. Thank God for credit cars. Sigh. This really, really sucks. I hate insurance companies.

Hi there,

I am currently going thru setting my HSG procedure up and am trying to determine the approximate total cost. From what I can tell, there will be three separate bills. The first one will be from the clinic (which I assume is my fertility doc's fee). 1) This fee is $1,067.00. Then there will be a bill from the hospital where the procedure is taking place. 2) This fee will be $750-$800. Then, because a radiologist is required to do the reading (usually thru a separate billing facility), there will be a third cost involved. 3) This fee is $116. That brings my grand total to just under $2000 after all is said and done. This is just what it will cost for me in my area (WI), but I am sure this cost varies. Unfortunately, my insurance will not cover this procedure because it is labeled as "infertility", however, all of these bills will still be submitted to my insurance by the provider just to be sure. After they are denied, then I will be billed (so I shouldn't have to pay anything up front for this particular procedure). Of these three separate billing facilities, each one said they have no problem arranging payment plans which are usually $50-$100/mos. (no interest of course).

I hope some of this information is helpful and wish you the very best of luck. I know this response is many months after the initial post, but I hope that if anyone else has this same question (which I did and that is how I found your question and responses) that it will help. Several other responses I noted were around the number I came up with. I was shocked to see some of the lower figure responses, but I think that is wonderful HSG's are not this high everywhere.

As a side note, I do have to pay for all my ultrasounds ($134) up front and IUI procedures ($250) (things of that nature), but if for some crazy reason my insurance covered any of these, I would be reimbursed. Different things can obviously be coded different ways, but once there is a history of infertility in your records, the insurance co. will see that and likely deny anything that in other situations could be done for other reasons. For whatever reason, my insurance co. (which doesn't cover IF) has covered my IF doctor's visits, bloodwork, portions of all rx's (minus my injections), and I think my initial ultrasound which seems very odd to me but I am thankful for that. Again, best of luck http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies.../happy0161.gif

Cost of HSG Test

I recommend checking the price of an HSG Test with an independent radiology center. My doctor had scheduled my HSG Test with the hospital radiology department. I called to compare the "out of pocket" cost of the procedure (in the event my insurance company won't cover) with an independent radiology center and found them to be 1/2 the cost of the hospital. The hospital wanted to charge $568 plus additional charges for the interpretation of the test and drug charges. The independent radiology center's total charge for the test, including the "interpretation " was $230 to $260. I would definitely "shop around" before scheduling your test.
