4 Embies - How Many Should We Thaw?

Our first two rounds of IVF ended in biochemical pregnancies. We have 4 embies left from the last egg retrieval, so in August we will be trying FET for the first time.

We are thinking of thawing 2 for transfer so that we have 2 left if the first FET doesn't work. I think our RE is leaning toward wanting to thaw all 4 and transfer everything that makes it through the thaw (hopefully they all will). She says about 90% of embies make it through the thawing process.

Any suggestions? Thaw 2 and 2 or all 4 at once?

Hey! This is my first FET also, and hopefully only FET I will ever have to do. With that being said, I am going to thaw as many and transfer the best ones. I have 11 snowbabies, and I will transfer 3 or 4 depending on their grade and chance of survival. For fresh cycle, I transferred 3 perfect embies and none of them took. That's why we are going with 3 or 4. I am not planning on doing anymore FET, which is why I would most likely have all thawed. If this doesn't work out, I am moving on to a new doctor and starting a fresh cycle.

I think if you are planning to have more FET in the future, than you should go with thawing 2, but keep in mind that sometimes they don't survive thawing. My doctor said about 50% survive the thaw.

Your RE wants to do 4 adn transfer all 4, probably to give you the best chance of this FET working and getting you pregnant. Goodluck!

Thanks, missthuyn.

On a different note - what is Lupron and Dexamethasone? Why are you taking them? I ask because I wonder if there is anything we should be doing before moving into the FET.

Did you not take them for your IVF cycle? I was told (and this is off the top of my head) that Lupron is to keep my ovaries quiet. It keeps me from ovulating. Dexamethasone is an immunosuppressor. It is to keep my body from rejecting anything foreign (like the embryos). I think there's something else it does, but I don't know for sure.

Anyways, I hate both of these drugs the most! I prefer stim meds and PIO over these two. LOL. The side effects makes me sick and keeps me up at night.

I've heard of people doing natural FET, no meds. My RE doesnt' reccommend it because then I would have to time ovulation and stuff before ET.

I don't think I took any of those - just the stimulating hormones and then estrogen patches and progesterone inserts.

My personal statistics for this cycle

Hello,
I just wanted to share my experience with you on this frozen cycle. I have had two chemical pregancies (one fresh, one frozen). This cycle my RE wanted to do "poor man PGD". He basically wanted to take the best looking ones that made it to 5 day.

We thawed 6, 5 survived the thaw. Only two made it passed day 4. They ended up transferring those two.

It is a very personal decision, but thats how it worked out for me.

I am also on a natural FET. I was still monitored the first half of the cycle, but no meds. Since the transfer, I am on Lovenox, estradial and progesterone. So I guess its only partially "natural."

there have been several success stories around here with natural FETs - a lady in our group- her ivf failed (chem preg) and she did a natural FET and now she has twins When do you test?? you get a BFP

Thanks Tracilynn

I am trying to stay positive. I go in 10 days for my beta. I have decided not to POAS this cycle. It just stresses me out more and doesn't mean anything with the chemical pregnancies.

I appreciate your words of encouragement.

Thanks all, for your responses. Our game plan is this: my RE will thaw 2 embryos on the day of transfer; if both make it through thawing we will transfer both and keep 2 frozen. If only 1 or none make it through thaw, then they will thaw the remaining 2.

If we end up with 3 thawed (because 1 of the 1st 2 makes it and both of the 2nd 2 make it) we will transfer all 3.

This sounds like a good idea. Keep us posted!

Question Stressed, anxious and worried

I am new to this site as this is my first posting ever. I'm not sure what all the lingo and abbreviations are although I try to figure them out. I am 44 years old and have never been prego. I am married two years now and unable to conceive. I have had two IVF's which both resulted in pregnancies but I miscarried both times, each further then the other. I am now scheduled for an FET on Setember 30th. I have 4 frosties and if all make it through the thaw they will all be transferred. I am confused because although I am not doing a natural FET I am using the patch as well as an oral estogen pill but that's it. I will start progesterone once my lining is confirmed thick enough. Why do some people use Lupron and some don't? Does anyone know of someone my age being successful with an FET?

Trixie-The vivelle estrogen patches are fine that protocol is used alot . Each re had his own potion so don't worry about that. As far as success at 44 well it all depends when the eggs were retrieved. The younger the egg provider the higher the Blah Blah Blah you know the drill. Its only takes one so try to be positive and keep your mind open about options.
