Endometrial Biopsy

I am curious about anyone out there who has had (or has planned) a biopsy of your endometrium to test for problems. I know there are things that can be detected via a biopsy (such as proteins that may be lacking, like the beta 3 integrin protein).

I have had 2 biochemical pregnancies now and asked my RE about whether or not we should consider a biopsy before proceeding with an FET cycle (we have 4 snowbabies). She does not advise a biopsy at this time. She said that there are many things for which they can test via biopsy but that the conditions are rare and the testing is very expensive. After 2 biochemicals, she said that it is not standard of care to start performing random endometrium biomarker testing via biopsy at this point.

She also reminded me that in the 2 weeks preceeding my upcoming FET that she will be measuring the thickness of my endometrium with regular ultrasounds to ensure that it gets to 5mm or thicker before we transfer in the embryos. (The thickness of the endometrium is one of the main indications that the endometrium can maintain a pregnancy).

Her rationale made sense to me at this point. I am curious, however, about anyone out there who is having endometrial biopsies done and if so, what is your biopsy sample going to be tested for?

I had a biopsy, but at my request. I didn't do it to test anything; however, I know my doctor had the biopsy tested as normal.

I read a story about a lady who was having difficulty having implantation occur. Her doctor did a biopsy and she got pregnant with her next cycle. I don't know how long between her biopsy and the cycle, but it worked for her.

I asked my doctor if she had heard anything about this. As you can see from my tag line it took 5 procedures before implantation occurred. My doctor said that there wasn't a definitive study on the effects of biopsy's and implantation, but it couldn't hurt. So on my January IVF we did the biopsy. As you can see we didn't get preggers. I'm not sure why as you know we are never sure why.

When we had our FET we did not believe it would work. We truly only did it because we were getting ready to change doctor's and wanted to get what we had "left" in their lab out. I was curious though if the Biopsy had residual effects and that is why the FET worked.

I could not find the original article I googled just prior to my biopsy, but here's one that's pretty informative on it. New England Fertility Institute - Endometrial Activation

Good Luck with whatever you decide.

I plan on having the biopsy done after my next AF. We suffer from Azospermia, so I only have my one IVF to use as a judgement, but it was also a chemical pregnancy. I figure that if the test shows that there is an issue with my lining (which is always thick, lush, and ready for implantation - according to my old doc), then it is worth every penny. On the other hand, if it shows that everything is normal, then that is one less thing to stress about.

I found that my RE didn't address immunological issues with fertility. Now I am at a doctor that does, and I feel like we have a strong plan for a BFP result!

I am so sorry for your losses. That is not a fun roller coaster to be on and low that I experienced took a year to bounce back from (sort of). Personally I would question why a doctor would not run the test (especially after 2 chemical pregnancies).
