metformin??

Hi, I've been using metformin for a couple of months now, and I was wondering if anyone else is on it and about how long does it take to kick in and do its job. I've been diagnosed with PCOS which slightly confuses me because most of what I've read on the net the main reason ur diagnosed is because your not getting regular periods, which I am. But anyways my next question is does metformin cause cysts to break or rupture?? And if it does, is it painful and how long does the pain usually last?? Any answers that any of you have would be great. Thanks

Hi there - I have been on this med since October of last year and it has not regulated me yet. I was only on 1000mg per day and the RE just up'd it to 1500mg per day this week. I have never had any cysts from it so can't help you out there. I am also not IR. Good luck and I hope it helps you out. S/E are not pleasant but do pass within a week for most.

I've been on metformin for about a year now and I can't say whether it's regulated my cycle or not. I got a period about a month after starting it, but since my cycles were so irregular beforehand, it might have started then even without the meds. After that I've either been on Clomid or pregnant. Even though I can't tell if it's regulated me, I know it's working since I was able to start losing some weight after starting it (without really changing my diet or exercising) and I've noticed that I don't crave sugar like I used to.

Irregular cycles are one of the most obvious indications of PCOS, but there are a lot of women who have it and still have regular cycles. There are a lot of other symptoms too. Did you doctor do an ultrasound to check your ovaries or a blood sugar test to check for insulin resistance? Those are the best ways to conclusively diagnose it.

I've never heard that the metformin causes cysts to rupture so I wouldn't worry about it unless your doctor mentioned it as a possibility.

thanks for the responses. i was having alot of stomach issues around christmas time and was puking up blood so the doctor had an ultrasound done but as far as i knew it was for the stomach issues. i was not on metformin at that time. So i dont know if they used that ultrasound to try and diagnose or not. I had blood work done on the 21st day of my cycle to check hormone levels and from that they determined I do not ovulate regularly so that is all the tests I've had done at this point. (a year and a half). We had the referral to the specialist and thats where we are at this point. I'm wondering (I dont know where u all r from) but do you guys deal with fertility specialists or just your family doctor?? I would really like to go in and see if he will put me on clomid to speed up the process, that way when we get in to the specialist we can go to the next step if it gets that far. But thanks again for the comments, much appreciated

If your insurance covers it, definitely see an fertility specialist (usually a reproductive endoncrinologist, or RE). They will do treatments as simple as Clomid as well as all the way up to IVF. Then if the Clomid doesn't work and you move on to something more aggressive, you're still with the same doc who is better acquainted with your IF history.

yeah the wait list to get into the fertililty dr. is another 8 months or so. And here the insurance does not cover anything . So I'm really hoping it doesnt go to the IVF stage.

Metformin

Hi I started using the drug on June up to 2000 mg a day. The doctor told me it will take 3 months but guess what I'm pregnant (just found out yesterday). I was diagnosed with PCOS and have been following a diet and doing some exercise. Lost 15 pounds in a month.
Just wanted to give you some hope and maybe they just have to increase the mg per day and it will do the trick.
Take care
