How many cycles of IVF are you planning on doing?
I'm new to this website and have been trying to find research on how many IVF cycles it typically takes for a woman to become pregnant.
My DH and I have done 4 IUI's with Clomid and just did our first round of IVF where I had 18 eggs retrieved, 16 of them fertilized with ICSI and we transferred 3 six cell embryos on day 3. The reason our RE chose a 3 day transfer was because the embryos were beginning to fragment. Unfortunately, none of the remaining embryos progressed to the blast phase so we had no embryos able to be frozen. I'm just wondering if anyone has seen stats on how many cycles it typically takes for someone to become pregnant. It seems like people I talk to about IVF always know someone who has done it and had to do multiple cycles for it to work. At this point, I don't know if I'm up for that, especially since our RE does not have any explanation as to why the embryos began to fragment and whether or not we will have a different result on a subsequent cycle. Any input is appreciated! Thanks! |

I think it varies so from person-to-person, that I don't think there is any such thing as an average number of tries. For financial reasons, I limited myself to two ivf cycles. Neither worked. My doctor seems to think that if money were no object, I'd eventually get pregnant with my own eggs, but he could never give me any sort of guarantee as to when that might be. He definitely would have allowed me to keep going, though, as long as the emotional toll wasn't too great.
Good luck with your decision. Kathryn. |

3 people I know did IVF and got preg with twins on their first try!!! I thought I would too...nope! I did one Fresh, one FET, and now on to my second fresh. I did do the shared risk program, so I have another fresh if I need it.
The studies say everytime you do it you increase your chances, up to 6 times, then your chances decrease. It is like flipping a coin, the more times you do it, the more times it is likely to land on heads.
