Does your insurance cover accupuncture?

Hi all,

I'm considering trying accupuncture, and I am just trying to figure out costs and coverage. Those of you who have done accupuncture or are continuing to do so, do you mind sharing what the cost of each treatment is for you? And whether insurance covers it?

Thanks!

I tried accupuncture about a year ago...my insurance did not cover it. I believe the cost was about $80 per session. She had me coming in twice a week, so it ended up being about $640/month + the cost of herbal pills, etc. At the time, we had not seen a RE yet, so I didn't realize you could do a round of IUI for the same price. My obgyn said accupunture was a less expensive natural way of trying.

Do you have a flex spending account? I do believe you can use flex spending to cover accupuncture, if that helps.

My insurance doesn't cover it for infertility purposes but I plan to submit to flexible spending. I found a guy who is $40/session which is pretty good. He suggests 2-3x per week. I am going to do 2 b/c of cost. But he also gave me this nasty tea and pills and a 2-week supply was $190! I didn't expect that costs so I'm not sure I'll continue with those. I have a feeling my RE won't approve anyway especially when I start my IVF meds in about 2 weeks.
Good luck and hope this helps. My guy is in Chinatown so if you have a C-town where you live you might be able to find cheaper sessions.

The place I'm going to go with is affiliated with my Fertility Center, so I feel more comfortable working with them. I need to call my insurance company, I guess.

It's $150 for the initial consult and session and then $90 for each follow-up.

My acupuncturist is from a facility that focuses exclusively on fertility. My initial consult (which lasted about 75 min) was $130 and now each session (~60 min, including brief consult) is $90. My acupuncturist said that their rates are a bit higher b/c they specialize in infertility; she thought "regular" acupuncture (which I think would be good for my mom's fibromyalgia) would cost less. My insurance will cover acupuncture but only if provided by a DO; I chose to stick w/the fertility specialists b/c I think they have a greater awareness of how to use acupuncture to help me, they'll come to IVFs when clients have them, etc. I use my flexible spending acct.

Hi Winkie.

I'm also in NYC and looking for a good acupuncturist. Did you like the guy you were going to? Did he examine you by taking your pulse and looking at your tongue, etc., and did he also look at your medical records from REs? Anyone you could recommend would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Breezy

My insurance did not cover it either but it did cover chiro care so if I got adjusted he gave me half off the acupuncturist. So it was about $40 a session. I went in weekly.
