Question My nurse cancelled my cycle because it falls on Thanksgiving is this normal?

my nurse cancelled my cycle because it falls on Thanksgiving is this normal? I called my nurse at my RE's office to tell her my period was coming this weekend and how I was to proceed if it happened on the weekend. As far as bloodwork and ultrasounds go. I am supposed to start my injections of Follistim this month. I've had my last 3 cycles cancelled do to having a cyst.

She said oh.....your cylce is falling on Thanksgiving so we arem going to cancel it.

WHAT???
IS THIS NORMAL

SHE SAYS THEY WILL CANCEL ME IN DECEMBER TOO B/C OF CHRISTMAS??????????

HELLO???

HAS ANYONE HEARD OF CANCELLING CYCLES B/C THEY RUN INTO HOLIDAYS????

I'm paying for this and the medication I don't think it's fair to cancel a whole cycle b/c it runs into a holiday. She said there is always an on call doc there but that it's easier for them to cancel than chance them missing the holidays????

This seems wrong to me?

I know that my second (of 3) fertility clinics didn't do anything the month of Dec. just so there wasn't anything thru the holiday/New Yrs, BUT Thanksgiving....I'd be upset, too.

Talk directly with the MD - and maybe get another clinic...esp. since you've already had to scrub the other months because of the cyst issue.

Thumbs down I'd find another clinic!

This is just MHO, but I don't think it would be right for an office to cancel you after already committing you half-way as far as the meds and the sonograms. Are they going to reimburse you because they're cancelling the cycle?

I've had to wait out cycles because of too many cysts, etc but never had to worry about the season. My doctor's office has an agreement with a bigger office to handle weekend work as well.

Tell us what you decided to do. In theory I could understand why the doctor would want their holidays but if they started you on a cycle, it doesn't make good buisess sense to cancel you due to an inconvenience on their part.

Cancelling two cycles because of the holidays, after you've had to sit out 3, just seems WRONG. Are you working with just a few drs. in one office? I would talk to the doctor, or seriously consider going with a bigger practice that has more options. Surely they realized when they became doctors that they could miss a holiday?

My RE office (THe Mayo Clinic) has "black out" periods in December and July. They told me about it up front, so I knew to expect that. I also had a friend use the RE at the University of Minnesota and they do the same thing.

I am new to this forum, and I don't want to upset anyone. I think my RE schedules to do no IVF's in December as well. I am an OB/GYN as well. Sucks to be an OB and to have infertility issues. Seeing pregnant women all the time, delivering babies and can't get myself pregnant. Anyway, it seems like most doctors try to scale down their procedures around a holiday. My collegues try not to do major surgeries near the holidays so that the on call person won't get stuck with any possible complications. Yes, when I and all doctors decided to enter medicine and OB/GYN in particular, we knew that we would be working weekends, holidays, and nights. Still we are humans with lives and families and friends. Take a minute and think of all the time your doctor is there for you and think of all the sacrifices that doctor and his/her family has made for you and all of the other patients. Sorry for the rant, but sometimes it is hard when patients are not considerate of us. I know that I have had several patients be very rude to my staff when I had to reschedule patients because of my recent ER and ET. Not like I can schedule ER and ET months in advance.

That is ridiculous. I would be on the phone complaining to the American Medical Association. My place is open 365-thats insane---I would be pissed.

This is just ridiculous. I go to the Huntington Reproductive Center in California and they are open 365 days a year. I actually feel bad for my doctor and his staff; they never take a day off. If I were you, I would change clinics.

My RE does the same thing. They say it's for them and their families, as well as for me because it will be difficult for me to relax and let my embies attach and grow over the holidays, and it would also be torture to have me on bedrest or if there were any complications.

That probably doesn't make you feel better.

When i started seeing my RE they went thru and explained to me that they will NOT do anything on major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or the 4th of july! Im sorry that they did this to you I would be upset too! especially since you have had to cancel so many already! Maybe if you just talk directly to your MD he could work something out but if he cant i would be expecting a reimbursement!

This is probably more normal than you think- I am on the IVF board and this is the policy at most clinics- particularly when you are on stimulant drugs like follistim that need such close monitoring. For example, they'd let you continue on a clomid cycle.

I am sorry they didn't tell you ahead of time however, this is unfair practice.

That's not okay. I would demand a refund. They need to be available every single day of the week, regardless of holidays. You're paying SO MUCH MONEY for them to postpone your cycles... I wouldn't stand for it one freaking second!!!

Give me their number... I want to give them a piece of my mind!!

...but seriously, I would definitely talk to your RE about it and say, hey, normal women can just go home and do a little and get pregnant... I HIRED you to get me pregnant, whether it is a holiday or not... I can't control my cycle timing and what you're asking of me is TWO MONTHS out of the precious time that I have left to have this work. This is not acceptable!

I worked at a fertility clinic and while it was "low class" they did NOT close on holidays or weekends...there were always nurses on call and on site. I think this is BS too and would complain to everyone and anyone who has a authority....at least you derserve a refund if they started this cycle and THEY don't intend on finishing it. I would also look for another clinic.

I should add we did close for 3 weeks in December for a mandated cleaning/inspection and we were upfront with patients and would NOT set them up for a cycle if it fell in that time frame.
