Help!!

My husband and I just realized that we had several fertility issues. Our only chance for conceiving would be through in-vitro and the chances are very low for success. We have decided that after over six years of trying that enough is enough.
We have come to the decision that we would like to adopt, but the process is so overwhelming and I have no idea where to get started. We are not fortunate enough to know anyone who has already gone through the process so we are on our own with this. Any ideas or suggestions would be great!
Thanks!

Infertility

I am truly sorry to hear about your infertility problems. Being positive and accepting that you would rather adopt than try anyway is one step. This is a great place to begin. Research and read everything you can about adoption. Check into some agencies in your area. Might even try to attend some adoption seminars if there are any. This gives you a lot of insight and helps you to meet other people going through the process or who has been through the process. Might even try to attend a foster to adopt seminar just for knowledge about how some of the systems work. Talk openly and honestly with you spouse. Answer questions between each other what you want or do not want. If one is really adament about one thing, but the other is not then try to work through that issue. Let everyone know that you are wanting to adopt. You might find people you do personally know that has been affected by adoption. Might even be a networking source.

GOOD LUCK on your journey!

Hi - we were in the same boat as you not that long ago - we know lots of adoptees but no one who has actually adopted. This forum is great. We also watched Adoption Stories on Discovery Health. The show was a great talking point for me and my husband as to what we wanted to do. We also got the Adoption for Dummies book. I got a list of all the adoption agencies in our state and when we were ready went to the general information meetings. We knew the basics about differences in domestic vs international and what open adoptions meant before we started looking at agencies. However we had not decided what age child or whether to do domestic or international when we started looking at agencies. Just take your time and do your research. Good luck!
