Also new, with myriad "issues"

I am not currently TTC, just starting to gather information because I face the following issues:
  • Still single, and 36
  • amenorrhea
  • anovulation
  • hypothyroidism
  • type I diabetes
I actually feel terrific, strong and, uh, in spite of all these problems very healthy! But I am nervous about them in the context of my time running short (now that I'm pushing 37). So I've decided, partner or no partner, that by 2008 I'd like to be trying.

But what to do first! Does anyone else out there not get a period but no one can tell you why? Should I see an RE? Have ovarian tests, or other fertility tests like a clomid challenge?

Just looking for a friendly voice in the dark to offer a little guidance... thanks in advance. I'm happy to have found this site...

Laura

Hi Laura and WELCOME! Glad to hear that you have decided that 08 is your year. A lot of us on this forum hope to be joining you in your journey. Have you ever been tested for anything inregards to IF? Have you TTC without results before? Just wondering why you think you may have an IF issues? If you haven't already seen an RE I'd make an appointment and just talk with them about your history and let them know what your plans are for this year. I'm sure that once tests and things are started you could be on your baby journey. This place is for sure the best place to get support and others living the IF lifestyle. I'm hoping there are others that will have some insight on your other questions. The forum is a little slower on the weekends but I'm sure others can help. Best of luck and keep us posted on your journey.

Hi Devan, thanks so much for the welcome message. You've made my day.

I really haven't done much testing. My concerns stem from having menstrual problems since day 1 (i.e. I was 18 for my first one and haven't seen much of it since then) and that my endocrinologist (who treats me for my diabetes) can't explain this amenorrhea to me at all. Anatomically and hormonally speaking I seem to be fine, and I respond nicely to progesterone withdrawal testing. But there's the diabetes and hypothyroidism, and cystic ovaries to boot. So many pieces and a puzzle that just won't come together. Plus I feel like I'm running out of time... At nearly-37 I don't have "years" to be trying. It scares me.

I think that RE appt is just what I need. This forum is a comfort and I'm wishing you lots of luck in your journey too... sincerely.

WELCOME Laura!!!

I would first start with your OB/GYN, if your doesn't specialize in some Infertility issues find one that does. When you say without a partner you also mean you havent been doing any Baby Dancing right? If that is the case I would start with the OB/GYN first and have them run all diagnostic tests. Reason I suggest OB first is if you haven't been Baby Dancing the OB/GYN would seem to be the most likely sourse. I too have mentral issues I had intially found a fantastic OB/GYN who specialized in some infertility issues and began with the diagnostics, but she got preg with her first and stop practicing. My situation is different since me and LH had been trying for MANY MANY years without luck.

Good luck to you- And you have found THE BEST place for support, encouragement and friendship!

Hi KuddleyGal,

I have an appt with a new OB/GYN in March. I've bounced around and visited a lot of OB/GYNs in my life, and it's frustrating to me that no one doctor has my complete medical history -- it makes for a lot of repeating oneself and some redundant blood work! I have had lots and lots (did I say lots?) of blood work....

I think I may be up for some expert (RE) help in addition to OB/GYN, but I'm definitely going to see one to start because you're right, it's important.

I see from your post that you've just learned you have diabetes AND had surgery! I hope you're not too overwhelmed with your new "lifestyle," and that you're feeling well. I'm a type I diabetic and am living that lifestyle for years now, trying to stay in good control. Please let me know if there's any questions you think I might be able to answer for you???

Take care and be well,
Laura

I dont have very regular periods. It can vanish for 2-3 months altogether.I still dont have a very conclusive reason for it.I dont have PCOS so my docs think that its the hypothyroidism thats causing this but now even when my thyroid is under control, my periods are not regular. So I am jsut as confused as u r as far as my AF is concerned. There is no harm in getting more tests done and may be that will help me get an idea abou me too
All the best!!

I also have Hashimoto's and no PCOS, even with the cysts speckling my ovaries (it's the only symptom of the syndrome i do have). My periods are rare and spontaneous. I can go years and years with nothing.

How/why do they "rule out" IUI?

Wishing you luck!!

Laura -

Now as for the PCOS, my OB did not diagnose me, she didn't think I had it, but when I went to the RE and he did the sonogram he found out that I indeed have it.

So I say start your shopping around for an RE. There maybe some girls here that live near you that can refer you to some great ones.

As for me, I'm still numb by it, and still trying to wrap my brain around how serious this diagnosis really is.

Any suggestions to where (which board) I might post a request for recommendations for an RE? I'm still learning to navigate this site!

Don't be intimidated or disheartened by your diagnosis. I'm going to assume that you've been diagnosed Type 2 diabetes and are on an oral hypoglycemic agent like metformin? You can control your diabetes with medication and diet, and it gets easier with practice. You CAN do it! And your body will love you for it.

Hang in there and do let me know if I can help.

I had TB in me cervix (cured now)because of which there has been some inflamation in my tubes too..hence,IUI might result in ectopic pregnancy so my RE ruled out IUI ,to be on the safer side.

Thanks for the explanation...I'm already learning a lot here just reading these boards.

Do you have any suggestion as to where I might post an request of people in my area to recommend an RE?
