regular vitamin vs prenatal vitamin (pg ment)

I just got a !!! I went to the dr today for my first blood test and asked if I should be on prenatal vitamins. So far I have just been taking over the counter vitamins - One A Day Women's. He said that I do not need to take prenatals. He said that as long as the multi-vitamin had Folic Acid then I was fine. What do you think???
Thanks!

Interesting question. When I first started seeing my RE, he immediately put me on prenatals. I'm surprised yours didn't. But if you are getting folic acid from your vitamin, I think it would be okay. I'm not sure about the difference in folic acid doses between a woman's vitamin or a prenatal.

I guess RE's have different outlooks on Prenatals. I know my RE just gave me a script and said for me to start taking them until.. So I am not sure.

It seems to me that drs are all different when it comes to prenatals. I wouuld definitely take a high quality prenatal vitamin(and did so).In addition to folic acid you also need different amounts of iron and calcium when you are baking your little one. I took a fabulous prenatal that I got in the health food store and also took omega three essential fatty acids they have alot of dha which is proven to benefit a growing babies brain. My thinking tis that with all the things we take and endure to get pregnant our little fetuses and babies deserve the very best. Congrats on the pregnancy ENJOY IT!!!!

My RE put me on prenatals as well. However, the OB I saw for years still recommends that her patients take women's one a day if not a prenatal vitamin. Because it deals with women's health it's sufficient. I've had a friend who now has two beautiful and healthy children and she only took her Women's One a Day vitamins. So you should be just fine.

I have been on a prenatal for most of the years we have been ttc. I am now pg and taking the same prenatal vitamin. I didn't want to switch since it is working well for me anyway.
Congrats on you pregnancy!! Best of luck to you!!

vitamins and fish oil

I have now asked my dr around 3 times about the vitamins and he says that it is fine. He says I don't need additional calcium or iron (which I think some women take). So...I think I'm going to stick with the Women's vitamins.
My other question is... Has anyone taken Fish Oil? My acupuncturist recommended it since I don't eat fish or seafood and therefore don't get Omega 3. My Dr. says there is no proven effect of Fish Oil during pregnancy. What do you think?
Thanks!

JCG - yes you need that fish oil - that is your omega 3.

I take - prenatal, cranberry, garlic, folic, and cod liver oil (fish oil)
