Question Prenatal Vitamins

I was wondering should I start taking them or wait?

I've not been taking any of them an seen were's other are. I forgot to ask my RE about that. If so can we just buy them or what?

Still on my 2ww an had some mild cramping but isn't due to come til 7th of July. On June 23 had some bleeding for a split second an it was gone. It scared the peas out of me. My last was on June 10-13th. As far know was suppose to Ovulate on the 22.

Good Luck to everyone an to all..

It's safe to take prenatal vitamins before, during, and after pregnancy. My dr actually recommended taking them months before I conceived to be sure my body had all the nutrients it needed. You will excrete anything your body doesn't need from the vitamins in your urine. I was told by my dr that the ones you can buy over the counter are pretty much the same as the prescription vitamins. It can't hurt to take 'em!

I took Materna by Centrum the entire time we were TTC. I also took folic acid. You are actually supposed to take folic acid BEFORE you get pregnant to ensure baby gets a healthy start because we don't get enough folate even in our enriched foods. My MFM doc told me that 5 mg is the recommended dose now because it has been discovered to prevent certain types of congenital cancers as well as spina bifida. Good Luck!!!

My mother, who is a midwife, recommended I start taking pre-natal vitamins as soon as we got married....just in case! They are really just like regular vitamins, but have more folic acid and more iron. They are very safe and good to take. I actually take mine in the evening, before bed, and I don't get stomach upset from them. 400 mg of folic acid is all you need when looking for which prenatal vitamin to take. And, they turn your pee a fun shade of bright yellow....LOL

I've been taking them since before TTC, and I will probably continue to take them throughout my childbearing years as my official multi-vitamin.

I started taking prenatal vitamins as soon as we saw the re..they recomended them of course but I knew that folic acid was essential and i am already somewhat anemic so i knew the extra iron was essential...on the other side of the spectrum don't get worried that you are not already taking them..if you eat cereal for breakfast there is a good chance you are getting a good dose of folic acid as many of them are fortified as are breads and other prepared grain items(is that a food group? lol) this is becuz of the increase in folic acid deficient related birth defects that were ocurring so many prepared foods got a bump up to help with that...when i had my first son i was almost 3 months pregnant before i realized it(no af for years lol) and i had not been so much as taking a regular multivitamin but ate the dickens out of cereals and he turned out awesome...good luck to you ( i just buy otc prenatal however some people like a prescription cuz insurance co pays can make them cheaper and also medical can be tax deductible)
good luck again

Question More questions.... ???...

Hey Ladies I have another question or two for you all on the prenatal vitamins about the iron. Everytime I have my iron level checked it is very high. Is there a prenatal vitamin out there with no iron because my iron levels are very high an has always been.

Also on the folic acid I eat a bowl of the mixed cherrios each morning with 2 glass of OJ can't let my possium get low. Can I be getting enough folic acid through this stuff?

I've switched to fresh fruits to eat each day too.

Going to be paying bills tomorrow so then will pickup prenatal vitamins for me.

Slyfox- When you say your iron level is always 'very high" like, what is your iron level/hemoglobin? The reason I ask is that I would think if it was abnormally high a doctor would have ordered more b/w for a condition called Hemochromatosis where your body absorbs too much iron, which can be detrimental to various organs. Maybe you can call the last doctor that did b/w and get a copy of the results. I have started getting copies of any b/w, tests I have done just for my own knowledge and records.

All that being said, I had been taking Target brand of prenatals and have minimal to no side effects. My RE prescribed Primacare-One, which has additional things such as DHEA. Since miscarrying, I have been taking the Target ones, but guess when I start to do FET, I'll switch back to the prescription ones. Another tip to not having side effects is take the prenatal before you go to bed!

Good luck to you, I hope your get your BFP very soon!

Godiva4me Slyfox- When you say your iron level is always 'very high" like, what is your iron level/hemoglobin?
SlyFoxy answer: I'm not sure on that but everytime I had it checked by doctors. I was told I didn't need any vitamins with iron in them due to my iron was high. I don't know what they mean. It's not a dangerous level but just stays at a high level. The doctors have never been worried about my high level in iron because it is good if get pregnant again. When got pregnant long time ago my iron level never dropped at all stayed up to the same level.

Godiva4me also said: The reason I ask is that I would think if it was abnormally high a doctor would have ordered more b/w for a condition called Hemochromatosis where your body absorbs too much iron, which can be detrimental to various organs. Godiva4me when I go back to RE for 2nd IUI if don't get a BFP here in a few days I will have bloodwork again and ask them about my iron level to see if still high but I've had high iron level for years. Will find out by RE about it here in few days unless get a BFP if so will see new doctor and get them to tell me.

Godiva4me I sure hope we get our BFP very soon. Going to ask for a copy of bloodwork when go back to RE unless something changes.. Not sure how to ask but will ask about copy.

My DH asked me earlier what I asking you ladies?
I told him about the question on the prenatal vitamins and he said to me honey wait til we go back to our RE an asked him about this because I don't want you to purchase something that may harm your body since trying to get pregant. He don't want me to mess up. He beginning to be more watchful since he's a lot involved in this stuff. He been making me eatting better too. I was going to purchase a small bottle of folic acid an he told me to put them back on the shelf. Going to listen to him..

Thanks for all the help from all of you. to everyone...

I would say that if you're nervous about the extra iron included in a prenatal to just get a folic acid supplement instead of the whole "prenatal package."

Do you already take a multivitamin?

vacantsea here is why I haven't been taking the prenatal vitamins. Plus I'm not taking no type of right now being kinda scared to after the attack I had..
I was taking prenatal vitamins until I was put in hosptial due to thinking of having a heart attack an when told the doctor what I was taking he told me to stop the prenatal vitamins an when I went to our RE I didn't tell him I wasn't taking prenatal vitamins. When go back to RE going to ask him what does he think I should take unless we get a bfp if do will have to ask other doctor. I've been eatting very healthy but no sure if my body is getting all it needs.

I think for the most part as long as you eat a well rounded diet you don't really need multivitamins.

However, while pregnant your needs change. It doesn't necessarily mean you need "prenatals" though.

Definitely check with your RE. If they don't think a prenatal package is right for you (because of a need to avoid certain vitamins and supplements) they can recommend which individual supplements they think are right for your unique situation!
