Question Wellbutrin and TTC

I wasn't sure where to post this so I hope I'm able to get some responses on this forum. Do any of you know if it's okay to take Wellbutrin while TTC? I'm visiting the RE tomorrow and was planning on asking about that but thought I'd check here first so I don't feel stupid asking the RE if it's something you can't take while TTC. I'm wanting to take it to kill three birds with one stone I NEED to quit smoking but I'm having a hard time doing it on my own. I've heard of many people taking Wellbutrin for other reasons but it helped them to quit smoking as well. I've also noticed a lot of weight loss in people who have taken it so I'm very interested in that as well. I've got about 70 pounds to lose and I'm afraid I'll gain more if I try to quit smoking on my own. And it would be great to have an antidepressant to take to help with the stress of TTC but I don't want anything too strong. So anyone ever heard of taking Wellbutrin while TTC? Is it safe?

Hi, I used to take Wellbutrin for depression, and got off of it when we started TTC. After a couple of years without a BFP, I recently went back to my doctor to talk about getting on it again, and he really cautioned me against it. Apparently, it's a class "C" drug, which means it's had some adverse effects in lab animals, but there's been no test on humans. But all of your baby's organs start to develop in the first trimester, and his thought was that this was the worst time to be taking it. He'd feel more comfortable with me taking it in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters where things are just basically getting bigger.

Ultimately, it's up to you and your doctor. I know there are women who take it during pregnancy because it's detrimental to the baby for mom to be severely depressed, but that doesn't seem to be your issue.

Good luck!

hi thought i'd add my two cents i was on wellbutrin for depression when we conceived my first son(didn't think we could lol)..anyhow i was about 3 months when we found out and had been taking the drug the entire time..I stopped immediately scared outta my mind my ob/gyn said that while they wouldn't recomend taking it while pregnant that if i needed it that was what was important and to continue with it..however it just sealed the deal and i totally stopped...ds was born with no problems..totally healthy and i thanked god..however my own opinion is the smoking is probably worse than the wellbutrin but wellbutrin doesn't work for everyone to quit smoking...or so a few of my coworkers have told me..good luck with that i know it can be really hard and hope you find the way to quit that is right for you and the baby to be
