Progesterone is the hormone that supports the uterine lining. For about 2 weeks after ovulation it's made by the cells in your ovaries. If pregnancy occurs, the enbryo / placenta takes over the production of progesterone so as the ovarian cells stop making it, it's made by the embryo / placenta and the uterine lining stays intact. If pregnancy does not happen, the drop in progesterone as the ovarian cells stop making it is what triggers a period, since there's no enbryo / placenta to make it instead. Does that make sense?
In some cases, like a luteal phase defect, the ovarian cells stop making the progesterone too early, so that even if you are pregnant, the ovarian cells peter out before the embryo / placenta is far enough along to take over the progesterone production. The body senses this drop in progesterone and triggers a period, so no chance for the embryo to really implant. In the case of IF treatments like egg retrieval for IVF, the ovarian cells get damaged in the egg removal process, so also can stop making progesterone too early. Hope that helps! If you do BBT charting or use OPKs and know when you ovulate every month, your OB or RE can look them over to see if there might be signs of the luteal phase defect. Good luck!

HopefulinCO how would I know I have a defect?
I ovualte on my own each month around the 14 to 15 day but this time my as LH surge was late on day 17 which is today an it has never been that late before but of course my RE upped my Clomid from 50 to 100 last month. I will ask my RE about taking them an see what he says. Trying my darnest to fingure out what might help us get pregnant an stay pregnant when it happens. Wish I could afford IVF but can't so have to stick with IUI for now but later thinking of going to injectables if don't get pregnant but that we get pregnant an not have to do that.. I'm scared of needles but can give animals shots that awful of me..
