RH Negative

Hi-

My husband and I have been TTC for about 2 years now. I have always known that I have B negative blood but just realized it can be an issue while pregnant. Are there any other women out there with the same issue? I would love to hear your stories.

Its not really an issue as long as you get Rhogam. If youve never been pregnant before you are fine. You'll get Rhogam at 28 weeks and if you have any type of bleeding scare. At delivery they'll get umbilical cord blood to find out the baby's blood type. If its Rh pos you'll get Rhogam again after delivery. If its Rh negative you won't need another shot.

If there is an accidental mixing of fetal and maternal blood (which is rare) you could develop antiboties to the Rh pos cells, because its foreign to your body and your body is trying to destroy them. Thats what the Rhogam is for, it somehow suppresses the development of those antibodies. If those antibodies are made your body will most likely attack any future babies (If they are Rh pos), if they are Rh neg it wont harm them.

If you have been pregnant before hopefully you got Rhogam. If not just be compeletly honest with your OB and they will monitor you.

I hope this helps. It took me a long time to understand this concept in nursing school. If I didnt explain it well let me know and I will try again.

I too am RH- (B-) and my Ex is O+ and so was the baby. I got a rhogam shot while pregnant and after delivery and everything was fine.

Ironically my hubby now is O- so I don't need those shots. Do you know dh's blood type?

The second reply explained everything exactly. I'm O ned and hubby is B neg, but we got the shot anyways due to the fact that our embryo was made in a lab. There is no 100% gaurentee they didn't mix something up. I'm sure we will be fine, but we just took extra precautions.

Just found out my husband is O positive so there is a good possibility I will have a positive baby. I am glad to hear that it is not that bad and all of you are pregnant so maybe it is a good thing I am in the RH neg club! I am sooo excited for all of you. Good Luck!

I asked a few friends & family members who are negative & postive but with opposite spouses as well and I found a pattern...

All those that had baby boys had the mother's blood type...and those with girls had the Father's blood type. It maybe nothing but I found it funny.

As long as you get the shot you will be okay.

Yep, Lauralillies was exactly right in the explanation. I think some if not most OBs will give Rhogam even if dad is also Rh negative (even if the embryos aren't made in a lab) because it's a sad fact that not all men who are named as dad are really in fact bio dad and many OBs just treat all Rh negative moms with Rhogam. Or there's always the chance that dad is wrong in his blood type. After all, it's only one injection, there aren't any serious risks, and the risk of Rh incompatability, especially with subsequent pregnancies, is so severe that it's worth it.
