Biopsy to get sperm (aspiration) - advice?

Hello -

My husband had a vasetomy reversal that didn't work.

So...now we are using donor sperm...

I would like to know if any of you have had experience with a male getting (sperm aspiration) a biopsy of his testicles to obtain sprem that way. has anyone had experience, luck...with this??

Was it painful? What was it like? He would rather have me use donor sperm that do anymore procedures...

Thanks!

ArmyWife - My DH had a much more invasive procedure to see if he was producing sperm, and even that wasn't so bad/painful, etc. The procedure your DH would have, since it's likely he's making sperm, would be a relatively simple biopsy. I'm not sure exactly how invasive it is, but if you can afford to do IVF, I'd say go for it!! There are a ton of gals who have had DH's go through the differing levels of TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) procedures on the Azoospermia thread under Causes of Infertility/Male Factor Infertility. There are many success stories of women using their DH's sperm and getting pregnant after a biopsy and IVF with ICSI (sperm injected directly into the egg).

Good luck!!

Yes, i can see where he's coming from, especially since he already has biological children. However, if you think about it from the child's perspective, if IVF with DH's sperm is possible, it will be easier on the child, I think. I also think compared to the vas and vas reversal, the biopsy will be no big deal since it's likely his procedure would not be too invasive since he has sperm, they just can't get out.

Good luck convincing him!!

I can relate to your story and try to give you some advice based on my own experience. My DH had a vasectomy at some point during his prior marriage. He also had two children in that marriage prior to deciding that a vasectomy was his best move. (which of course I disagree with) Either way, I had both of my tubes removed so when we initially visited my RE they felt the best option would be TESE rather than trying to reverse the vasectomy. The TESE is very similar to any Biopsy except in this case just a bit more of a sensative spot. Well, as of 9/19, my DH had the TESE procedure. Under full anesthesia and well medicted prior to returning home, the first day was a breeze, he slept. The second day was uncomfortable but easily combatted with ice and advil. By day three he returned to work. Still walking like he got off of a horse but definitely much better. His surgeon wanted him to wear a jock strap for a week so by day 4 that was his biggest complaint. Within a week, he was 95% better. The best part is that with the help of the TESE, we are now 7w5d pregnant. From what I am told, not only can they guarantee sperm retrieval with this procedure but they also select the actual sperm they will use based on quality. I am hoping that some of this helps you to convince your DH. On a side note, not sure if I am assuming here but my DH is an Iraq Vet.. possibly another coincidence. Good Luck.

KRIS79:
Yes, I agree with you about it being wasier for the child if it is his...none of my friends understand why he wouldn't want to at least try it...
Thanks for recommending the other thread.
