An yone get a surprise BFP while on a break from infertility treatments?
We decided to go on a break from infertility treatments (which we did for the last 12 months) until we have the money to move on from IVF, my question is have any of you gotten a surprise BFP while on a break? Brief history - I am ok, we are dealing with MFI (low sperm count). It actually feels good to not be going back and forth with all the appointments, ultrasounds, bloodwork and meds which I did for 12 months straight, this is a much needed break! Just looking for anyone out there who lucked out while on break and if so were you dealing with MFI at all? Thank you for your feedback

I haven't, but i've seen a few girls get their BFP's on a break cycle with MFI issues. Its maybe a handful of girls on fertility friend in my years of TTC. But it does happen. Goodluck!

Yes I have seen and heard of this too, hoping we fall into that lucky area, it would sure save us a ton of money since our insurance does not cover IVF

Oh i totally understand! I've been praying to be one of those for years. We just aren't lucky enough LOL. Yes it sure would save money. Our insurance doesn't pay for anything with IUI or IVF. Totally out of pocket ![]()

We were lucky that they covered IUIs unilimited, we knew the chances of it working were slim to none but figured since we had the coverage let's try - it's so frustrating we just got copies of our billing records for last year for tax purposes and our insurance company paid out close to $75K for all of our treatments last year - so why the F won't they cover IVF we could have saved them money! It's so frustrating

I am one of those girls!!
I did 6 IUI's (a 7th was cancelled) and one IVF. ALL BFN. After the last IUI we did after the IVF Dh and I decided we needed to take a long break and figure out what more we wanted to do, and when enough was enough. All in all we were at it for 2.5years. We saw a new RE for a second opinion and she suggested giving me a script for crinione (I have a super short luteal phase) while we tried naturally and until we decided what we wanted to do. Two months into our break we went to Ireland as a 'deciding to enjoy being the two of us' treat and I came home pregnant. 11 months later I became pregnant again, this time a total surprise as we were not TTC. So I am a success story! It does happen! Back ground for Dh would be sperm count issues ranging from normal to low, and were described as slow movers while we did fertility treatments. During our break he received a kidney transplant and we were told 3 months later he was completely sterile (normal after major surgery) and to retest in 6months. It was 2 months after that that we had our BFP. Best of luck, it does happen! ![]()

Good to hear! I did 12, yes 12 IUIs - only reason my doc let us do so many is I was not having any side effects - 2 of these were natural cycles with no clomid and I still responded well - everything with me is good, my hubb'y sperm count is very low - it has ranged anywhere from 100,000-15 million postwash (15 million was our last cycle, he has been taking a bunch of different vitamins so we think this might be helping) - it sucks because his blood and urine came back normal so they said it's unexplained - he did just turn 40 so they think it might be a combo of his age and job, he works aruond excessive heat all day). I feel like we are so close but so far away from making this happen at the same time! Our insurance frustrates me - they cover IUIs unlimited but do not cover IVF - when I requested a copy of our records for tax purposed we found out they paid close to $75K to our fertility docs for all our treatments and tests last year - so why not cover one IVF cycle!? So frustrating

We were in the same boat with IUI coverage but no IVF coverage. One thing my clinic did was to offer up medication for free to patients who had to pay out of pocket. This was in the form of donations from patients who had to cancel their cycle for one reason or another. All medicine was unused and untouched. A couple had to cancel as we were starting so I got everything for free, and just had to pay for the testing/retrieval/etc. (still 11K!)

Funny you say that my doc mentioned the same thing about the extra meds either being donated by other patients or from pharmaceutical reps - we have a follow up appointment next month to determine what the next step might be, it sucks because our docs do a lot of research that cover IVF cycles but so far I have not qualified for them (the one the minimum age requirement was 35, the other one was the couple had to have unexplained infertility). I am hoping our patience and determination pay off and something pops up quick, we are so ready to take the next step! My hubby is not sterile he just has a low sperm count that ranged anywhere from 100,000-20 million for the IUIs, I tried fighting with the insurance company and what it comes down to is my hubby's employer chooses the plan, the plan we have specifically states it does not cover IVF - they understood my fight that they put out all that money I could have done 2-3 IVFs for that much money
My hubby's HR department even tried getting it changed to where just my he would have the IVF coverage but since they are on a group plan they would have to change everyone in the company and the cost is higher to both the employer and employee - it's just so frustrating!Last edited by cherylanne3550 : 02-22-2012 at 05:53 AM. |

We decided to take a break in September after our 4th failed IUI and just do the natural thing until January and then do IVF. I was starting BCP with my December period so in November I said let's give this one last try. BD every other day. Two weeks later I signed the IVF paperwork, took out a loan from my 401K and waited for AF to start, it didn't and I got my very first BFP on a home test! Couldn't believe it...unfortunately my miracle ended in a chemical pregnancy;however, it showed me that I didn't need to spend the money or take the fertility drugs to get pregnant so I'm hoping the miracle happens again within these next few months and sticks!
Good luck to you during your break!

Wow that is amazing! I have a friend who went on a break and 2 days before her IVF consult found out she was pregnant! I think the stress of all the appointments, bloodwork, ultrasounds, meds etc. despite what the issue has a lot to do with it not happening with assistance. I hope we get lucky and I do feel less stressed now that we are on a break
