Something I meant to add onto this earlier..my husband has BCBS of Nebraska so there's no confusion and we checked into it for fertility coverage. From what was said, they cover testing but the treatment they don't cover is what it's looking like. A major bummer.
I did received something in the mail earlier today (Friday) that has updates of new co-pays and so forth so it may be worth making a phone call if it gets to the point that we might be looking at something of fertility treatments. No guarantees that things have changed there but I guess it wouldn't hurt asking. I'm just trying to focus on my dr's appt Tuesday as it's only a few days away. My nerves are already starting to dance a little. LOL! Last edited by SueBear : 01-19-2008 at 02:17 AM. |

i know that BCBS has different plans. I have the ONE that the fertility center in Memphis doesnt accept. And of course its from DH's work. I'm wondering if i could get another insurance just for this. I really want to go to this fertility place.
Right now DH is looking into getting me vitamins. After that, we'll see where we go.

Coverage for IF is a benefit that is chosen by the company the insired works for... not the insurance co itself.
My husband and I own a company, our rates would have gone up 50% if we added the coverage... we chose not to since it is just us to right now... it was cheaper to poay for the IVF then the premium. If you the insured person works for a large company, then they are more likely to have the coverage because they can get more of a discount.

My husband has Blue Cross Blue Shield and they do not cover what is needed, period. What is covered is testing, not treatment there is a large difference. So in other words. We might find the problem by testing and that would be covered by insurance however the treatment will not be paid so we need to plan ahead and figure out what to do in regards to that. I have learned that every Blue Cross and Blue Shield program is different because there are so many branches and then each one can get more specific within a company from there. |

I work for one of the Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. There are ~37 different BCBS plans in the U.S. They belong to an Association so share some rules to carry the brand - i.e. customer service requirements, claims payment requirements, etc... but other than that are run completely differently from each other. You can kind of think of it like a franchise (aka Subway).
That being said, it is typically your employer that chooses to cover infertility, NOT the insurance company. The insurance companies job is to "contract" or create a relationship with each of the doctors in their geographic area and negotiate a mutually agreed upon rate for services. However, the employer sets your benefit - copay, coinsurance, whether to cover infertility, how much to charge you in premiums, etc.... |
