Unhappy Help - So Confused!

Hello Everyone,

I am so confused, this is my first IUI treatment (Day 10) and I am doing the injectables (75). I am getting the impression from my doctors that I am developing too many follicles. Presently I have 3 good ones. How is this a bad thing? I mean, don't I want to have many as possible? And, just because you have X number of follicles doesn't mean that they are all (if any) going to take right? The doctor just made a comment that carrying triplets could be problematic (which I understand) but isn't that putting the cart before the horse?

The nurse is going to be calling me this afternoon but I would love your input ladies.

Thank you so much and best of luck to everyone!

Hi there!

Hope I can help a bit...my doctor usually doesn't want any more than 2 mature follicles. They use this as a way to manage the chances of multiples. They definitely don't want as many as possible for other reasons (health of egg, ovaries, etc) that I am not totally sure of.

Usually you can have many follicles which is good, I think they just don't want too many mature ones or for them to be over-mature before you trigger....because if they are too big they start to lose their ability to fertilize. Thats why its usually a delicate balance between the u/s (follicle size) and the bloodwork (E levels).

I've given up trying to make sense of it all and just trust my RE...he seems to know what he is doing. So as long as you trust your dr and feel good about him, I would feel ok.

Good luck!

You are right...I have to have faith in the doctors and I do, I just hate feeling like I have no control. If you don't mind me asking, but did you conceive your first child w/ fertility treatment?

When will the stress go away?!

Wannabe- I know how you feel. I remember my doc threatening to cancel one of my cycles last year because I had too many follicles and i thougth he was nuts. He gave me this long lecture about the danger of multiples and at that point I had never even once been pregnant yet so it was unbelievable to me that we could be worrying about having 5 when I'd not been able to concieve 1! I remember telling him, the only number of kids I'm afraid of having is 0! And he relented. But he left the practice and I have a new RE now and he told me flat out, he wont allow me to have more than 2 or 3 mature follies going into an iui.

I was told by my RE that with an IUI cycle, the maximum number of mature follicles that they would still inseminate with is 4.... and that's only after having the talk about selective reduction. The thing with IUI is that conceivably all the follicles you have could fertilize and multiples really are much much more stressful and difficult for your body.... especially when getting into 3 or more.

I only ever produced 1 follie at a time, but I can imagine how hard it would be to potentially have an IUI cycle cancelled for too many follies. I just try to think that really what I want is a healthy baby and for me to stay healthy at the same time.

I do not know anything about the Follies but I am glad this thread was started because it answered question that I am sure that I would have. I did not know there was a restriction on Follies because of all the research I have done did not say anything about that.

The other ladies are right...RE's definitely want to lessen the chances of you having multiples. Even if there is a chance that all follies won't make it/get fertilized, there is also a chance that they all will. Just for me personally, I don't want to have more than 2, but this cycle I had 3. I still went through with it, since my first 2 were unsuccessful.

Hi Colleen, I awould agree with the doctor. I think he is just trying to keep your health and your babies health in mind. Multiple mature follies surely increase the chance of getting pregnent but then they also have the danger of all getting fertilized.
BUt like I always like to think. Think positive ans think that it will work. If RE says go for it, just go for it and pray really hard that everything goes well.
Good luck. I had three follies ans we went ahead and i am hoping it will work.
