Did you have an HSG before your first iui?
Hi! I am getting ready to start my first iui and i asked my RE if and hsg was needed and she said i could have it done if i wanted but otherwise we would try a few cycles of iui first.
I was just wondering how many of your RE's had you get an hsg before your first iui or if it is common to have a few first THEN have one?? Thanks ladies!!! Happy to be finally joining you!! jen

I had a few IUIs first, then the HSG. Do whatever makes you comfortable. I wish I would have had mine first I think just to make sure everything is open (mine were). Hopefully, insurance will pay most or at least a part of it. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Because we felt I was low risk for having blocked tubes (no stds, no PID, no endometriosis, no pelvic surgeries, etc..) we are trying IUI first and if it doesn't work, we may explore the hsg test. My RE said it wasn't 'necessary" but 'good to know'....with an 80% chance that isn't the issue...we decided to go ahead with IUI since insurance didn't cover the hsg test and it was around $1500.00.

Hi
I had one done...but as you can see from my sig. it didn't show what was truly going on anyway. (I'm not really sure how common it is for that to happen.) Best advice I can give is to go with your gut. It usually leads us in the right direction! Pennycuff.....I noticed you have an old english sheepdog!!!!! I had one as a kid for 15 1/2 yrs. I want another so badly!!

Pennycuff....what a cute pup!!! I'm such a weirdo that whenever I see someone with one I get so excited I have to run over and ask if I can pet their dog!! My husband thinks their dirty looking dogs (can ya believe it!!!????), so there will be a lot of compromising (and begging) if I ever get one. He really wants a french bulldog. My feeling is, I don't want a dog that's no bigger than my cat!!

Definitely get the HSG!! I had 3 IUI's before I got an HSG and I found out my tubes had a mucous plug on both sides. So that was pretty much a waste of 3 IUI's.
Plus they say fertility rates increase within the first 3 months following the HSG. I must warn you...I found this procedure very painful!!

I would defiantly recommend having HSG before IUI. Our dr. said it would be pointless to spend the money on IUI if tubes are blocked. Some even think it is therapeutic, I actually talked to an old friend today who said she had been trying for 14 months with two rounds of Clomid, she had an HSG and the next month they were pregnant! It's possible the die pushed a small blockage out of her tubes and "cleaned" her out.

Jen-
I had my HSG the same month as my first IUI. They did the test I believe on day 8, and then I headed straight to my RE's office for my scan the same day. Didn't work for us, but sometimes the test helps increase your chances (due to clearing out even little things in your tubes)

Jen,
The HSG was one of the first tests my RE recommended for me. My insurance covered it so that made the decision easier. I did not find it to be terribly painful. Just like mild cramping with a couple sharp sensations, but my tubes were clear so that could be why. i have heard it can be more painful if you do have a blockage. I was glad i did it early on, so that i could know that the tubes were not the problem. I just started IUI this cycle, after one round of clomid. Keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to you! If you have any more questions about the HSG or IUI please dont hesitate to ask. |
