Question Newbie: Low sperm motility after reverse vasectomy; Treatment, TTC and success rates?

Hallo All!

First of all, I want to thank you all for sharing your stories and for being such a strong support network. I have already learned so much from your sharing.

This is my situation. 2.5 years ago, I met the love of my life. He was divorced with two children, aged 7 and 9. He had a vasectomy, which he reversed as soon as he learned that I wanted to have children. I am 35; he is 44. He is my angel!! We got married on 29.08.09.

Anyway, I learned last week that despite the reverse vasectomy, his sperm has low motility. I learned today, that I am okay.

I wanted to know whether anyone had a similar situation. I spent the weekend doing all sorts of research. Only to end up totally lost with all the different diagnosis, recommendations, success rates,...! Worse yet, I am in Germany and have to navigate through the world of Assisted Reproduction in German!! If you were in a similar situation, what treatment did you use? How long did it take until you were successful? What would you recommend? We have a couple of appointments coming up and I want to be informed.

Thanks in advance for all your advice and support!

Erica

Welcome to the forums!!

Depending on his motility levels, IUI might be a reasonable option. Usually doctors do like to see motility over 50% for an IUI, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to try if it's lower.

If you're looking for a higher success rate, you might want to try IVF with ICSI (they actually inject the sperm directly into the egg). I think in these cases, motility is not an issue. I don't know how your healthcare system is in Germany, but IVF is more expensive here in the US so people usually try IUI first. But if you can afford it, and his motility is particularly low, IVF w/ICSI might be the way to go.

Good luck!

Thanks, Kris!

It looks like my husband's motility is in the 15% range, so IUI does not look like a viable option. We have an appointment on Monday with the RE, so we will found out more then!

Congratulations on your baby boy!! I wish you all the best of luck!

Ciao from Germany!
